Rebuild - help
So decided to rebuild our 90 4runner with 22re, we had a shop do the long block and did the high performance option ,(hypereutetic pistons ,oversized valves, pro-comp cam , high-flo head , port & plolished) . I had to reinstall it myself , i have only done this twice before in older trucks .
I set it at TDC and then after starting set the timing to 5 degree BTDC , and set the valves to .008 - .012 ...
So i get it all together and it starts right up and holds a high idle til its warm , then the idle drops to where it should be (around 1000) and then fluctuates just a lil up and down ... and when i try to rev on it I have to do so slowly or it will splutter or backfire out the intake ... Im certain i have everything hooked up right again , and i cant figure it out .. i was thinking vacume leak , but ive found nothing ...Any Ideas ?

I had a similar problem with the fluctuating. However, my 22re is an 87. I don't know if that makes a difference or not. The way that I fixed it was adjusting the dash pot. It is a little vacuum control valve under the throttle stop screw.

Ok , so i checked and they said 1,000s tighter than stock , so i need to go back in and readjust again ... lol But the timing should be stock at 5 BTDC
I checked on the dashpot , but its not vacume fed on mine , and dosnt seem to make a difference on the adjustment screw .
Anyone think the Thottle Position sensor would make that big a diffenence ? I tried adjusting it back and forth , but it only make a higher or lower idle , and seemed to still make it ghug and backfire when i rev it ... but maybe i should go mess with it some more .

22R and 22RE Custom Pistons
This is my first post and I could figure out how to post a new message so I replied to this message:
I race dirt track with an 83 Celica. I have a set of early 22R CP 94mm pistons that needs a single piston replaced. I also have custom set of JE 22RE pistons (85+) that needs a single piston. Do you know any company that will sell a single piston? All I have found want to sella full set at about $600. Or, if someone on here has a similar set with a bad piston would work.

Are you absolutely certain about the cam timing? Valve clearances are OK. Put a vacuum gage on it and report back what you have at hot idle. Pull out the idle screw and carb cleaner the hole well. Then clean tip of screw. That fixed my high idle after a head rebuild. With correct timing, you should get about 20" steady vacuum. I hope you did not put a hot cam in because it will likely mess up the idle and low end power. You must set the ignition timing by jumping two pins during the set and check and then jumper removed. And, if head was significantly shaved by shop, it will retard the cam timing. If head was lightly surfaced, no issue to be concerned about. Report back with camshaft duration @ 0.05" lift, which is standard in the industry, if you got it and Procomps cam part number.
