Rebuild engine or replace

1994 Toyota 2wd auto pickup 22re recently timing chain jumped have 300k on the truck and can't decide on going the route of rebuilding or buying a remanufactured engine located in Virginia. Trying not to put too much money in the truck since it's got 300k. Found a used one on craigslist that has less than 100k on the motor they say but say it won't run unless you put fuel pump on truck not sure if I can trust that. First time having to replace a Toyota motor so anyone have any input on either reman or rebuild it thanks.

Red face

I gotta ask How much is to much money??

Running used 22Re engines seem to go between $800.00 to $1000.00 at least close to my area .

Able to install your self?

With that many miles on your engine Boring the block and maybe a new complete head depending on damage .

What shape is the rest of the truck in ??

This could get real expensive quick .

Thanks for the reply! I would like to keep it under 1,000 and I would be installing it myself. The trucks in pretty good shape no rust on body or frame. I found an engine for sale that says it had 120k on it and blew a head gasket so the guy rebuilt the top end resurfaced the head, new studs, timing chain, oil pump, water pump and he wants 700$ for it. I just don't know how I feel about buying a motor without a warranty or receipts on it but the price seems fair.

700 sounds like a good deal if it was done right but that is a big IF. I have ordered motors on line for a little more then $1000 just have to search around. Rebuild one has cost me more then ordering one. It has been a while since I ordered one but you get a warranty and usually cant build one correctly with all the machine work involved. I dont have the heads rebuilt anymore. It is usually better to just buy a new head.

You mentioned that the timing jumped, does that mean you have some bent valves, broken pistons, bent rods? If not, you might be able to get away with just replacing the timing chain and head gasket.

put the timing chain back and do a compression test if you are thinking about fixing that motor. if you have good compression and you didn't have oil pressure issues when it ran I would say just fix the timing and run it while you save up for another engine. if the truck is in good shape like you say and you LIKE the truck it is worth putting a new engine in. You are the only one who can decide if it is worth it to YOU. With 300K on it there are a lot of things that you may need to fix or replace, but if you systematically work through the truck you can turn back the clock so to speak and eventually have a like new truck for less money than buying a new truck.

Yea I believe the valves will be screwed same with pistons as I was going 70mph down the highway. So I'm leaning towards just buying reman motor I actually found one from RTP machines in North Carolina comes with 24,000 mile/2 year warranty for only 900 long block everything on it except the timing chain cover which I believe mine is still good. Has anyone ever had any experience with them the owner says he builds 22re's all the time.

I wouldn't recommend a remanufactured engine. At least not from anyone besides 22RE Performance or LCE. I have recently heard some good things about Yota1 but I've never dealt with them personally. The reman engines use super cheap parts and internals. Head gaskets are crap which leads to heads cracking. Rings are junk too. They will work but are not nearly as long lasting as OEM. If you want to replace the whole engine, I'd go with used Toyota before a rebuild with cheap parts. Depending on how much time you have, you might just be able to put in some new valves or swap a head over to your existing block. Where in Virginia are you? If you need an extra hand I live in the Hampton Roads area and could help out if need be.

Ask them what components they use, I wouldn't rule someone out just because they aren't one of the big dogs.
