rebuild or crate engine??

well fellers, im havin soem bad luck. a little background info on the truck(95 pickemup 22re 5sp) i owned the truck for a couple years, sold it october of 09 w/ a blown HG, guy put a gasket on it, the replaced the engine due to broken rings. he put a 22re out of a 95? with 120k on it. i bought the truck back jan 2010. ok, he told me the truck burned a littel oil when i bouhgt it. i drove it fro a while and it wasnt burnin that much, then this past week, it burnt 5 qts of oil, yes 5qts in one week. i put another 4qts in it today. its not idling, when i got the clutch in slowin down or stopped, it dies unless i pump the gas constantly. it runs warm, not in the red, but far past halfway. and now the tranny is strating to sound like a can of spoons when im boggin down, and when changin gears. it also is in desperate need of a clutch. i think the rings in this engine are broke to. so my question, should i just get it rebuilt, or get a crate 22re and be done with it? im jsut wantin stock, so no cams and headers or whatnot right now. im leaning towards crate engine, and rebuild tranny. whatda yall think?

ditto rebuild it and take your time. Build it as as stout as possible and you'll know what you have in it not what some guy at an engine shop may or may not have put in it. When in doubt rely on your self cause that's who'll be there to answer for the job.

I had a friend rebuild a shortblock for me one time, so I say this , If you want it done right, then do it yourself.. Learned that one the hard way, and a 22r isnt hard to rebuild. good luck

thanks fro the replies. it dont help either when my 85 isnt starting good and not gettin fuel somehow. anyways here the dilema. ive never rebuilt an engine, ive never torn down an engine. i dont like to do stuff im not 100% on how to do. i woudl liek to get an engine from LCE but the one id like is the 22re pro stroker longblock and its almost 5k haha. so its probably outta the question. i got a mechanic i would trust with my life. the good side about this is my income taxes are bout to roll into my bank account. does it sound liek to you guys its the rings?

Yeah sounds like the rings but i would do a compression check to be sure. What does the plugs look like? I was far from sure when i built my motor but trust me it's way easier than you think.

not sure on the plugs. a local mechanic that specializes in toyotas installed teh engine and went over it so its had to of went bad all of a sudden fro soem reason. also, when teh temp gauge is slose to teh red, the heat blows luke warm, well more cold then warm, but when its just halfway, it blows normal

i appreciate it maine, teh 85 is fuel injected. if i try to turn it on it will jsut crank and crank and crank, but if i turn the key to the position before on, when all the lights and whatnot coem on and the FI starts to kick in, adn let it set fro bout 10 seconds thn crank it it will start, sometimes it takes more than once. also i was drvin it yesterday and teh CEL came on for a few secs then went off and did that 2 more times. and when im on it pretty good it kinda spits and sputters and will only go to a certain RPM. i hopin its just teh fuel pump. and the brakes need blead. at idle it spits and sputters to. i bouhgt it in jan also from teh original owner. its got 233k on it with about 450mi on a rebuild. theres a thread in the 84/84 section on it
