my 93 pickup has 200,000 miles on its 22re, I want to replace or rebuild it with performance parts, what are the costs of rebuilding it with perfomance parts compared to replacing entire engine, I want to increase horsepower regardless. thanks Robert1965

 

What do you mean? Replace it with an entirely different engine.....ie. not a 22re?

 

replace stock 22re with performance 22re, compared to the price of getting performance parts and have existing engine rebuilt.

 

you have to be rich to get good power out of a 22re. intake header and maybe a cam is all i would upgrade and it will only help a lil.

Well Rob, I'll go ahead and let you know now that the 22re doesn't respond to a ton of money thrown at it in performance parts like you might expect it to...

The money spent to HP gained ratio is pretty sad I've done it first hand; dropped over 2k on a rebuild and hop-up, and MAYBE gained 20-30 HP or so in the end over stock... that included a $500 high flow head and cam, .30 over bore, header and full exhaust, cleaned and flow matched injectors, electric fan swap to get rid of the power-robbing fan clutch, etc, etc...


Probably the BEST bang for your buck to get a little more power out of the motor during the rebuild is an aftermarket cam from engnbldr ($100 or so I think; I haven't checked recently), a good header like a Thornley or LC Engineering ($150 - $400, depending how "exotic" of a header you want), and build the rest of the motor up stock, but build it right (you can get pretty good rebuild kits from engnbldr as well; I think in the $120 range). That should give you a long lasting motor with a noticeable power gain.

Don't bother with any of these "cold air intakes" you might see on eBay and stuff... they're useless in the engine bay of these trucks. You're better off using the search tool and looking for the "intake and battery swap"

 

with that many miles what rebuild kit would you use, what ballpark price am I looking at with rebuild, and enginebldr parts.
