Rear Window Switch Broken: How Do I Fix It?

The Up/Down switch for my '86 4Runner's rear window seems to not be working. Up until a few weeks ago, the UP button still worked, but now the whole switch doesn't work. Does anyone know how I could easily fix this? Thanks!

take the switch out, and clean the contacts. If the switch is just dead, go to a parts shop, and see if you can buy an aftermarket switch, or a 3 position toggle. Maybe hit up a pick a parts or a wrecking yard, and pick up a switch......

If you go to my build, on post 185-186, will have steps to get your switch cleaned and working.

Try cleaning the switch. But, before you go out and by new one should the window still not work, determine if it's the switch or possibly the relay on the rear window circuit board. Simply touching either wire (up and down) to ground will tell you if it's the relay. And, an ohm meter will tell you if the switch has good continuity.

Smile

Does the window still work with the key switch on the rear hatch?/

Like was said a simple matter to jumper the wires to make it work to see if it is the switch

Five days later............any progress?

If it still works with the key in the gate switch, then it's either your console switch or the associated relay on the circuit board. Either problem is common, and either are easily fixed.

After doing some testing, I think the switch may be good. I'm all new at this stuff, so how do I fix it on the circuit board? Any advice would be helpful

What testing have you done to determine that the switch itself is ok?

Well, I plugged in a working switch from a junk yard and my window still didn't work. So it may be the circuit board

make sure your window lock isn't engaged and that the tailgate is closed.

I just discovered a similar problem today after coming back from a trip to the "Shooting Range" The road out there is pretty messed up and as soon as I got home I could not roll up the rear glass. With any luck it's just dirty contacts. Keep us posted and I'll do the same.

The other easy fix would be if the 2nd(?) bolt from the back on the DS wasn't tightly down, but that and the tailgate being closed only matter if nothing makes it go up or down. Sounds like the relay, or maybe contacts in the window lock, if the lock switch isn't accidentally down.

If you determin that its the relay box, its cheap and easy to replace the relays on the board. Ive replaced the relays on three diferent relay boxes and they work like new when i was done. I think a new relay box from toyota is around $400. dollars.

Do a search here and you will find a write up on how its done.

Well guys, I have good news. I cleaned the contacts on the switch and it initially didn't work, but last night the switch started working again. I don't know how or why. The only weird thing is, it won't work when my headlights are on, but that's not a big deal.

GREAT THREAD!!

Have had my 4runner for several months now. The console switch for the rear window would only lower the window. I was having to use the key at the rear to raise it back up.

Read these posts, checked out Terry's build thread and started taking switches apart...

FIXED!! (of course after putting them back together) Window lock and up/down are working...

Now i have to get the wiper to work. The sprayer pump runs but the wiper doesn't move?? lol Always something :-)

FIXED!!
Someone in the past 20-something years must have spilled coffee on the switches

Simple explanation of window control system here. Sorry no time to discus interlocks, but basically all the up/down switches (rear and console) do are ground the proper pin through switches/interlocks.
