rear window removal / installation

I am in the process of replacing the tracks that go along the bottom of the glass where the regulator rolls in. How do I remove the glass from the tailgate? I need to get the regulator rollers out of the track before the glass is free. Will I have to remove the regulator assembly?

Thanks

The regulator has to be unbolted so that it can be shifted side to side so that the rollers might be slid out the outside ends of the track.

Run the regulator to where the rollers are at their widest spread with the window part way up.

And make sure you support the glass once it’s more than 1/3 of the way out. Laying horizontal like that it will shatter if it gets rolled out too far. Having someone nearby to help, grab tools, etc isn’t a bad idea.

sure, be carefull when extending the window when the tailgate is down, but it isn't going to shatter if it gets extended 1/2 way out (unless you drop a brick on it). caution and care will avoid wrecking the window.

you also need to remove the weatherstrip/wipers from the inside and outside lip of the tailgate where the window passes through, because the bottom track won't pass through the gap with them installed. i've got a maintennance thread over on t4r.org that shows some of the process i used to install a new track on the bottom of a window.

note that the glass is extended more than half-way out the tailgate in prep to remove it (almost all the way out)

only tools needed to install the new track

True, but having watched a few techs misjudge the breaking point I tend to lean on the cautious side.
After doing it a few times I can remove the glass and regulator fairly quickly, but the first time took a little puzzle solving.

Thanks guys. Had to remove the weather strip to get it out the tailgate. and the tracks were rusted so it popped out no problem. Have the regulator fully extended and unbolted to slide side to side for reinstall. 10-4.

Nice to know 2nd gen glass tracks work as a replacement.

well i got it all back together rolled the window all the way up now its stuck. I can hear it attempting to go up or down but it just shifts in that direction and stops. Its like the gears are stuck. any ideas? I have hardwired directly to the battery to rule any wiring I did, but I get the same behavior.
