Nope, shouldn't do that, that's got way too much play.

You need new bearings, might as well do the seals too.

I just did mine about a month ago. Got the parts from RockAuto. Pain in the neck replacing them without a press, but it can be done(I've done it twice now without one). Good luck.

Here's a good link, http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/mainte...wheel_bearing/

rear bearings are so much fun

there are two seals. inner and outer. there is a axle clip next to the inside of the bearing. do not mangle it, it must be installed properly. or gues what? youll look like a jeep.

depends what sort of shape they're in. You should do the inner seals for sure... especially since you say you had gear oil leaking into your drums, and they are cheap. Gear oil washing the grease out of your bearing when the inner seal leaks is the primary cause of bearing failures. If the outer seals are in rough shape, do them too, since you will have the axle separated from the drum backing plate already to replace the bearing... and yes, that bearing is shot, by the way!

The seals should never be reused just buy new ones.
You see your problem here is your axle doesn't like ac/dc.

Seals are cheaper than bearings, do it right the first time, so you don't have to revisit this issue later.

One of the reasons for axle oil getting past wheel bearing seals is pressure in the axle caseing .Allways check your axle breather or better still scrap it and fit high level breather hoses. Normally bearings and seals will outlast the rest of the motor even if you regularly fill the drums with mud.

bearing is shot for sure

If you dont have a press or the $200 SST with that press pay a shop the $40 an axle to unpress and install new outer seals and repress on new bearings.. $80 is about all most shops charge.

The bang on the ground method sucks and you will most likely have a fat headache and mushroomed axle splines. Just pay the $80 and get it done right.

I've been through this twice now, shop and at home method.. I'd just have the shop do it for me again next time since the at home method I didnt give a crap about the axles but was saving the bearings.

And put on some dif breather hoses ... the #1 reason gear oil gets into the brakes is because the breather is clogged not the seals.

Seals are cheap... Ask yourself how long you want the new bearings that you are complaining about as being expensive to last this time...

And those prices you're quoting are actually great for sealed bearings (assuming they are good quality bearings.)

your hands will ache for a couple of days doing the 'b.o.g.' method. the axles are hardened (sp) but its still not a good idea, press them off. if the outer seals are in good shape, just replace the brgs and inners, outers are basically dust seals.

I was having gear oil leaking from my driver side rear wheel and pulled my rear half axle yesterday. Believe it or not my bearing was even worse than the one in your video. $40 for a new sealed wheel bearing and outer seal + $40 for labor at the machine shop (getting the old bearing pressed out, everything cleaned up, and all the new gear installed). I'm putting it back in tomorrow so I'll let you know how it goes. The inner axle seal is a bitch to get seated properly though!
