rear suspension question

i put a custom built lift on my 4runner and its about 6 to 7 inches. i did a sas in the front and all is well with that. i kept the stock 4 link in the rear and got bigger coil springs i belive they were 4 in lift srings with 3 inch spacers which i cut down a bit. i was wondering if anyone else has done anything similar to this because i have been having some slight problems. i believe i may have to raise the bracket for the upper 4 link bars just a touch.

7inches is ALOT for the stock 4link geometry. What problems are you having?

well i had to put a pedistol on top of the axle inside the spring to hit the bump stop to keep from crushing shocks because nobody makes a shock to fit that lift other than very expensive adjustibles. also the right upper 4 link hits the gas tank which is why i said about raising them a little. if i do that i would think that might take some of the angle out of the drive shaft resulting in not bein so hard on the u joints. i also have a slight twist in the body as i take off. the sway bar not being on might be the cause of that but i dont think it should do that with or without the sway bar. any ideas?

The main cause of your problems is that you actually have a 4link with a panhard rod, or, in reality, a 5 link suspension.

The stock link geometry is not angled enough to locate the axle side to side the way a true 4 link design does.

Thus, Toyota added a panhard rod, which locates your axle side to side.

A panhard rod is supposed to be parallel to your axle in order for it to work properly. You have so much lift on the truck that your panhard is at an angle, which effectively shortens it. This has pulled your axle over to one side, allowing your link to hit the gas tank, AND giving you the "twist" you describe when you take off.

You need to adjust the panard with a panhard drop bracket. You can easily make one yourself (I'm assuming, since you did a solid axle swap, that you can weld.) Cut your old one off, and weld in the new one. Make sure the panhard is parallel to your rear axle housing.

That will fix most of your issue. You still are stuck with the fact that you have the stock links on there, which, at your lift height, have all sorts of screwy angles going on. It will also not fix your driveshaft angle. For that, you will need to rotate the axle upwards, but be sure you match angles at the tcase and the diff, or you will get horrendous vibrations.

Long term, permanent fix: do a real 4 link. Or, you can just do a leaf swap.

x2 for Axleike's post, especially regarding the panhard rod.

To add, with that much lift, the axle has swong forward and your wheelbase is shorter, allowing more weight to be behind the axle.

The simplest/cheapest thing to do is lengthen and beef up the factory links to get you to at least the stock wheelbase (103.25"), longer would be better, but you might run into some issues with the panhard. I stretched mine 1.5", and the ebrake cables are TIGHT.

The best thing to do would be a triangulated 4 link, but that requires relocating the gas tank.

yeah i have a 6in panhard drop bracket and also had to lengthin the rod itself due to twisting the other direction. we pulled a bunch of measurements and the axle is good from side to side.the top right link bar is hitting the top of the tank when it drops out not the side, thats why i was thinking on raising the brackets an inch or 2 on off the top of the axle thus making the axle have to drop farther b4 it hits the tank which my axle strap should stop it b4 that happens. i would like to do leafs or a real 4 link just dont have the time or money right now. have you ever seen anyone go about doing the rear likei did?

Molly's rig used LC lift coils in the back. Flexed like mad, but was prone to unloading.

The guy who built it made adjustable upper links to bring the pinion angle back in spec
