I just replaced the rear coils on my 91 4Runner, with Performance Products 1" progressive springs. I'm happy with the height and ride quality, but concerned with how the top 4 coils are pressed against each other. Is this something to worry about? Here's a couple pics-

Very nice. Been thinking about going progressive myself. I guess the extra coils are to allow for up travel and flex. that would be my guess. How much did you pay for the set, and from where? if you don't mind my asking.

 

I paid $159 for the springs and a brake rod extension from Performance Products, who is now Four Wheel Parts. There are cheaper springs available from other companies, but as far as I know, they aren't progressive. The shocks I used are Doetsch Tech MV 12's, and have very soft valving. They were $59 ea from Downey. The ride is much better than stock, and ride nice and soft. If anyone needs part #'s just ask.

 

What's the benefit to progressive springs? I sort of get it, but seeing as you've obviously gone and figured it out, let's hear it.

 

Progressive springs make the ride soft during the first few inches of travel, then get progressively stiffer as the springs compress, which is why the spacing is different. Closer spaced coils= softer spring rate...wider coils= stiffer. Vehicle unloaded= soft ride. My test ride down a rutted/ potholed/ bumpy dirt road was MUCH better than stock with the new coils/ shocks.........Someday after I win the lotto I'd love to buy and test different spring/ shock combinations.

 

What are the compressed/ extended lengths of the shocks? Shocks are the limiting factor rear flex.

 

Yup, you're right. In my case the stock shocks were limiting the extension, and caused a "clunk" when the suspension extended. So I got slightly longer Doetsch Tech shocks, on Downeys recommendation. 14" collapsed 23" extended. No more clunk.

Hey Matt- how do you like your OME coils and Pro Comp shocks? Any photos?

 

Those performance products springs are progressive and are great! I had them on a former 97 runner I used to have. I agree there are cheaper ways to go, but I do like those springs. That look is normal

 

Those coils look just like they should. The old Performance Products coils were definitely progressive and by the looks of those coils they are too. That extra spring you see stacked up there will help give you rear droop and is normal. They have always appeared to be a good deal to me but I've never had a coil sprung toy and never used them. If I had a 90-95 Toy I would probably have ordered them. Did it lift the ass of the truck up at all? Before and after pic would be cool. Congrats.

 

I should have measured before and after the spring install, but it looks like 3" higher than before. It may settle down a bit in time, but I like the height now. It's barely higher in back than in front. As for photos....I'll take a pic or 3 and post 'em when I get a chance. Feel free to post your photos if you guys have any.
