Rear diff locked up
Hey all,
First time poster here. I’ve got a 2 door 2nd gen 4runner that got handed down to me through family. It was pretty neglected in term of maintenance so I gave it a full service replacing oils, filters, grease etc. Recently my dad took it out for a drive and smacked the front underside pretty hard (I wasn’t there) and since then it’s been stuck in 4WD and the LSD rear binds up around corners. Wondering if any of you have any ideas on how to fix?
Cheers heaps

Are you sure the differential is locked? A vehicle in 4wd will "bind up" noticeably on corners. (Vehicles with "AWD" have a center differential, or something like that, to allow the front and back axles to rotate at different speeds. You don't have that.)
Jack up both rear wheels, and spin one. If the differential is working (and the vehicle is in gear) the other wheel will rotate freely in the opposite direction.
My first guess is that you have a bent linkage holding the transfer case in 4wd. Have your Dad climb underneath while you try to shift the transfer case.

There was no factory limited slip in a first or second gen 4Runner. Who knows what's been added since it was new? A limited slip can't really bind by it's nature. Even if it somehow became fully locked, it would just scrub the tires going around turns.
I think you need to investigate the fact it's stuck in 4x4. Even with open diffs front and rear, if you have it in 4x4 on pavement it will bind up and eventually feel like it doesn't want to move at all.
