06 taco locking rear diff

Should I be able to lock my rear diff on my 06 trd tacoma 4x4 in 2wd? I can and was just wondering if this was normal. Also, on the wife's 08 4runner, what is the benefit of the locking center diff? Sound like an all wheel drive option to me. Why not just lock in 4wd when needed? Thanks.

You shouldn't be able to lock the rear lock diff in 2wd, only 4wd Lo. The light will be solid on, not blinking. If you get a solid light for your locker in 2wd without a mod thats pretty cool.

True 4wd and part time 4wd aren't the same and AWD is preferred when driving on hard packed slick surfaces and pavement.

I would like to say that if you can lock your rear diff in 2wd drive, you got a cool factory defect. As for the center diff on your wifes 4runner, the purpose is to split the torque front to rear 50/50. Typically the torque split would be something like 70/30 R/F, to compensate for uneven terrain. Much like locking the rear diff, locking the center diff is for the more serious terrain your likely to encounter, and should be used at slower speeds.

Thanks! I have a 2in. spacer lift. Not the way to go, but I bought it that way. I am going to go with an OME kit a little later. As for tires, I am running 265/75 Toyo M/T's.

probably the "Grey Wire Mod"

Did you buy your truck used? There is something called like the 'grey wire mod' (not exactly sure if it is a gray one on the '05+) that allows you to override the 4WD Low requirement for using the rear E-locker. It is possible a previous owner may have done this to your truck. I doubt it was done from the factory.

Stole this post from ttora.com:

Remember the wires on the ECU side of the cut should be dangling, except for the violet wire that just gets tapped. The violet wire is the power wire for the 4WD ECU, so juice still needs to flow through it.

‘Lt Blue’ = 6
‘Lt Green’ = 5
‘Pink’ = 4
‘Lt GN/Black’ = 1
‘Violet’ (a.k.a purple) = 2 & 3
‘Red/Black’ = 7
‘Wht/Blk’ = 8 (ground wire)

**Disclaimer: This would allow you to use the locker in 2WD at any speed...use at your own risk...

you might want to check out this folder on ttora.com
good place for some more info on the '05+ taco's

Also take a look at the sticky on the '05+ lockers at the top of this forum folder...
