Rear brakes grabbing bad

Rear brakes grabbing bad

today my rear brakes started grabbing really bad. like so bad that in the slippery conditions it was really hairy trying to keep it on the road. any ideas?

sounds like you need to service them and soon! check out any one of the links to the fsm's listed at the top of the page. search on here as well, lots of posts on diy.

OH GOD NO!! lol i bought this truck to make it bigger besides i live in vermont no one lowers trucks up here lol.

The rear axle seal on my friend's 4Runner is leaking and gumming up the rear brake parts making them stick at times.
I'd take a look at them for sure. I appreciate my 4Runner coming to a stop when necessary, that's why I recently rebuilt the rear brakes; new wheel cylinders, brake shoes and hardware and new drums. Less than $150.

yeah ive definatly got to do that. having them grabbing like that on occation isnt alot of fun right now with every otherday there being snow on the roads. where should i look for parts so i dont spend a fortune?

I got all my stuff at Schucks, which is Kragen, etc. PartsAmerica on the internet.

Measure the drum inner diameter. If it is too large (worn) they will grab like crazy. I had this problem this summer and drums were the issue.

everyone above has nailed most everything.
and brake fluid, gear oil, contaminants on the shoes can cause them to become 'grabby' also

well it seemed to stop grabbing all together now *shrug* i can stop on snow and it only grabs now if i jam on the brakes hard. i dunno but im still going to go thru them i dont like the chance that they might do it again soon lol.

lol, ok, just check'n; if you lowered it it'll throw the LSPV off and apply too much brake pressure to the rear wheels if you didn't readjust it; it does the exact opposite when you raise the truck, it'll provide less pressure to the rear brakes...
