Really BAD Pinging, but timing is ok?

So, I got a code 52 so I figured I'd look at my timing. I replaced the knock sensor months ago and fixed the 52 and I couldn't believe the knock sensor was bad.

I cleared the code, and checked the timing. It was WAY retarded. The mark was an inch or so to the right of the 0 mark, and couldn't advance the dist any further.

So, I farted with the idle and distributor and somehow, miraculously, I can get the timing mark to 5 with the jumper in.

But....now....I get the worst pinging I've ever had. My whole drive the other day, about 350 miles, was a nightmare. Pinging the whole time, just awful.

Why would I get awful pinging with my timing correct? Should I just put it back down way retarded like it was before? I like setting things how they're supposed to be, but this is rediculous.

try giving the knock sensor's sheilding a good ground. Might also think about getting a new wire too.

When I was hunting the code 52 months ago, when I put another knock sensor in, I soldered the connector to the sensor, just to make sure it would stay, and I spliced a new wire, with shield, to the final 1' of the wire to sensor.

So, it's been fine for 6 months, at least. Never any pinging since, even with the code 52.

I only got the pinging when I put my timing to specs. I'm not getting a code 52 anymore, but still have the bad, bad, pinging. Sounds like freaking black cat firecrackers going off under the hood.

sometimes the rubber piece inside the harmonic balancer lets go and the outside edgde, where the timing mark is, will rotate in relation to center and put the mark in the wrong place. thats unlikely though. refer to the troubleshooting chart in the haynes...

Could the woodruff key possibly have fallen out and caused the balancer to slip out of position?

the woodruff key is the little piece of metal that lines the harmonic balancer up with the crankshaft.
