rattling when started

My truck has been doing this for a while but it's now starting to sicken me every time i hear it. If I start my truck cold, it starts right up and purs. When my motor is hot it will rattle and start as if its flooded only for a few seconds. By the sound of it I would guess it is the timing chain, but last time I looked at it about 3,000 miles ago it was tight. Does anyone have ideas like low oil pressure? timing chain? valves? I adjusted the valves also 3k ago.

The valves could be out of spec possibly. Mine does the same thing and has for the 28K plus miles I've owned it. Quiet on a cold start and a little rattle for 1-2 seconds on a warm start. I've adjusted the valves as they were all way out of spec at about 120K miles and that helped a lot. I wouldn't worry about it if the t-chain is good and it runs fine. Could also be the injectors firing up as well, I know mine are noisy as hell.

In my opinion a little warm start rattle is common on 22RE's and nothing to worry about, I have had some that rattled on every single start terribly and ran like that for a long time. Other people will probably chime in on this, but if the chain is tight and runs good, like I said, these are old noisy motors with high tolerances that's why they last so long.

Its a 22r if that helps any. Its a short but loud rattle. I don't think the valves would sound like that but then again I the one thats clueless on the problem. I kinda think it sounds like metal rattling before oil gets to it. On the other hand why would it only be when the engines warm? Iv'e cleaned the screen on the oil sump too. Now I'm regreting buying a used motor. The motor before this one did it too but that timing chain had quite a bit of play to say the least.

I would guess that when it's warm the oil is thinner and it leaks off the top of the motor and takes it a second or two to get back to the top end causing a little rattle. If you have looked at the timing chain and guides and the guides are in good shape and still intact then it's not the chain. My 90 has done this since I bought it in August 09 and I've put almost 30K miles on it since and it's fine. Drove to Colorado, spent 9 months driving around at 10,200 feet rattling away. I did adjust the valves and found they were all waaayyy out of spec so I adjusted them down to within spec, not too tight as valves get tighter when they warm up and you don't want to burn them up. Better to have too loose valves than too tight valves.

Maybe try a thicker oil like rotella T 15W40 since you are in florida and I bet it's still pretty warm there.

Ill just have to check the valves again. No noise at idle. I would guess my oils plenty thick enough. I used 5W30 and lucas oil stabilizer. That stuffs like honey. Any other ideas would be appreciated.
