Rattle from the engine

When I reach 2100 rpms my engine has a notable rattleing sound. It does it just for a split second when I accelerate and decelerate just as the engine hits or falls past 21-2200 rpms, then it goes away. I can maintain the rattle by keeping the rpms at 2100 but once they go above that the rattle goes away. I have no idea what it is. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

22re? I've got it too. One of the most annoying rattles ever. My old truck (22r) had it also. Its a very free rattling sound, which makes it all the more hard to find.

hope someone chimes in.

It's loud too could it be the timing chain guide or wrist pin?

my girlfriends truck had this problem. i thought it was the exhast sheilds. ended up being the timing chain guides were gone and they were slapping the timing cover. they ended up replacing the motor, it had 200k miles on it.

you never would have guessed this but my 89 runner started getting a bad rattle a long trip on the highway...when i got home it was dark and i looked under the truck for the rattle... it was coming from the O2 sensor on the exhaust... it runs out that the two nuts holding it on were gone and the gasket too!!!!!! now i have to replace the gasket and reblot it all... but right now it sounds like a corvette on crack from the O2 sensor not being fully on... CAN U IMAGINE THAT!!!

When you start it cold it does it, just sitting there. Once it gets warm sitting there not so much, but always when driving.

That was 1 year ago, i red this yesterday cause i have the EXACT same problem that is getting me crazy. Did you ever found what was the problem.
Please reply to this message or anyone else who has any idea.
Something i found was that when i listen with a "stetoscope" (long screw driver) the sound in question seems to be verry present right in this pipe (see picture) near the manifold. What is this part for ??? Any idea ?? Anyone???
THANX for any reply

Question Same Problem

Mine has the 2100-2400 RPM tick too. When I bought the truck and had it smogged in Colorado a year ago, the mechanic said that I needed a manifold gasket. This may be my tap, coming from the exhaust manifold. I'm not so sure that it's my timing chain and that's a costly piece at $250 or worse, up to $1400 for a shop to replace it. I'm ready to order the right piece with metal guides, but I don't want to fix it if it's not broken. I don't really have the talent, location, or means for a timing chain replacement right now. This tick is something that I've been blaming on the valves. See, I have 155k miles and no valve adjustments done since 100k. The chain is almost a must have. If anyone can save me the struggle and help us all with our sometimes noisy taps, please reply-

I have to be part of this thread also. I had the sou8nd, changed out thetiming chain and i still have it. I get the loud rattle right at start up, then it goes away. And then crusing i will get the rattle at the higher rpms when i am about to shift, and also get it crusing in 2nd gear on my road, i will get the sound whenprobably at about 2000rpms (guessing since i dont have a tach) IT is an obnoxious sound. I adjusted the valves also and still no luck. going to eventually get the yota oil filter and change the oil and use that.

I have the 3.0, and around 1500 rpm's, under light throttle, there is a sickening vibration that reminds me of an engine mount allowing the motor to move, haha. I have no clue what it is, but it annoys me highly.

My girlfriends little 92 Civic has this problem on startup. I thought it was the hood rattling at first, and its only during startup. I will look around the exhaust. I looked at the engine while it did this and nothing seemed to move. So I am guessing the exhaust thing is it.

Fighting this same problem...

Today, I took off all belts, one at a time, checking all pulleys, etc. Heck, I even found one loose bolt right above the Alt belt that holds the PS pump in place...thought for sure that would be it. NOPE.

This dang thing is driving me up the wall. I don't think it's exhaust related.. There are a lot of us with this rattle only at around 2000-2100 RPM. I watched the engine as I slowly throttled up to see if maybe the engine lifts up just a hair and something metal hits it. No idea now, but I hate it.

Keep this thread going till someone chimes in with the answer..

Thanks
