I had a problem with my 89 4runner today. The side gear shaft and stub axle on the right side came out of the diff, and lost 4 wheel drive. It appears this side gear shaft is a press fit only. Anyone have any idea what has happened, and why?
I only had time for a quick look.

Today I jacked up the 4runner, inspected things, found only the side gear shaft out of the diff about an inch. I used a hammer and long drift punch, knocked it back in, filled the diff with grease, and will drive it some to see if it happens again. If anyone has any similar experiences or suggestions, let me know.

Uh-oh, this doesn't sound to good. That should never happen. We'll see after the drive I suppose. Godspeed, friend. Stop reading here, if superstitious, you've got some trouble there, I can almost garranty.
