I suspect that you could make up some kind of a rounded-triangle shaped clamp, just big enough to fit over the two spring coils, then drill and tap one of the angles for a bolt. That way you could slide it onto the coils and tighten down the bolt pretty snug. It could very well pull apart over time, but would not soften the temper on the spring steel at least.
