So my check engine came on today. I tried pulling codes and nothing on the dash is flashing. Isn't the check engine light suppose to flash a certain number of times? I have the service/diagnostic port jumped with a paper clip, and nothing is going on. Can anyone shed some light on this...

 

Sometimes the paper clip trick doesn't make good contact with the terminals so you may want to use a short piece of stranded wire or find crimp terminals, to put on the end of a piece of wire, that fit into the terminals... I believe it should be flat/blade type connector 0.125" wide.
Also, don't start the engine- just turn the key on. (Not saying you did this but....)

 

yeah i can't tell if it's making a good connection because of the electrical grease toyota uses. I'll give that a try. I was thinking about taping into the wires and adding a on/off switch.

 

maybe i'm using the wrong connectors. can someone please clarify which pins to jump on the diagnostic connector.

 

Jump TE1 and E1.

Then turn the key to "ON", count the number of flashes, including any pauses (two separate codes, then repeat)

 

yeah that's what i thought.
