I want to thank everyone that posted. It was all a great help and enabled me to fix my truck. Last night me and my father inlaw replaced the solenoids in the tranny with the kit from dacco and now it runs perfect. Thanks everyone!

I bought a kit from dacco detroit for $170 that included the #1, #2, and lock solenoid. It was a very easy fix. I can tell a HUGE difference in the way it drives. Mine was also showing the code for the number one solenoid to but since the kit came with the #2 and lock solenoid I went on and replaced them too.

To replace them all you have to do is drop the sway bar by taking the 4 bolts out of the frame, drain the transmission fluid, take off the pan, locate solenoids and replace them (if you buy the kit from dacco it shows you a picture of the valve body and locations of solenoids) they have a rubber o-ring so they you have to pull kind of hard to get the solenoids to come out. Then just reassemble everything and add transmission fluid then your good to go.

My mechanic said he pulled that plate today and put power to the first one which I was having problems with and it shifted to 1st gear but he ordered it anyways because he told me that was what was causing my problems to begin with. I am looking forward to driving it and hopefully I won't have any more troubles. What exactly does the lock solenoid do?

My troubles were it felt like my truck was starting in 4th gear and it would never shift once I finally got up enough speed. I always had to manually downshift and then it did what it needed to do.

Good information there offroadyota

and whitetaco02- gives us an update when you get that Dacco kit installed.
So many old Yotas running around with the original selonoids....and some with the original tranny fluid! I think I had one of those. ZUK

all i am replacing is the #1 selenoid and it is going to be a toyota part. that is all i use. my mechanic actually told me that is was really clean in there and even mentioned another mechanic there stating the same thing. the fluid was flushed and replaced with fresh stuff when I got it.

I normally would go back with a Toyota part but the solenoids are so expensive and I wasn't 100% sure that would fix it so I went with the dacco kit that way if I ended up needing a new tranny I would only be out $170.

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a huge difference in driving. It is like night and day and I had no idea that a shift solenoid would make that much difference but it really does. it runs so much better now and shifts a lot smoother without staying in gear longer like it was doing. Mkaes me wish I would have gotten the other one replaced as well but I have to recuperate from the cost of this one first!!

Is there a source online for ordering the kit? What's the part #?

That's really cool. I bet that most all of the old 1985~1990ish auto equipped trucks/Runners would show a marked improvement in the way they shift and the "apparent power" they have. I say that because I road tested an 85 and an 87 Runner...both auto....both of them shifted were 22RE and shifted pre-maturely or sometimes just jumped up 2 gears to OD making them appear to be doggish. The 3rd one I bought was an 87 Runner...shifted too "strongly" with a clunk and I think all 3 that I tested could have benefited from the kit
