Priming oil system

Rebuilding my engine (22re) and I'm sure there is a way to prime the oil pump BEFORE start up right? I looked at the oil pump and its driven off of the crank...so the crank has to turn to prime it? I thought I might have to hook up a drill and prime it like that (kinda like a chevy)

Any help is appreciated!

When the heads are installed crank it over till you get oil to the heads I left the covers off and had a friend cover the hole so oil wouldnt go everywere! Worked great! Also another way is to remove the oil pressure sending unit and crank the motor till oil shoots out and it will shoot (dont start so take the plug wires off or unplug the dist.)

Hope this helps!

pull the spark plugs (that way there is not any compression this will keep the rod bearings safe) crank it over until you have oil pressure. primed!!!!!!!

Prime the pump with start-up lube. Also, smear it on the cam.

Pack the oil pump with Vaseline and forget about it.

I didn't say pack yo mamma with vaseline, I said pack your oil pump with it. It primes itself and then the vaseline melts harmlessly into the oil until the 100 mile change you should be doing anyway.

I don't think I'm putting vaseline anywhere

lol. Thanks for your help! I'll pull the plugs and crank her over!

I have not yet started to assemble the engine so I am going to be picking up some assembly lube soon

Google prime oil pump vaseline and you'll see I'm not just talking out of my butt here. It's been done that way forever it seems. I've done it to probably 4 different engines and it works fine.

Not saying I don't believe you or anything...just not sure I really see the point. What does putting vaseline have anything to do with priming the pump? lol

coating the pump gears with vaseline displaces air between the gears and creates a positive seal that will pull the oil up from the pan quicker.
it is perfectly harmless to the engine.
cam / assembly lube can be used as well if you're unwilling to share your vaseline with your engine / for anything other than your personal uses.
