power steering pump tight after rebuild

I just rebuilt my power steering pump in a 91 22re pickup using the kit from autozone. After I installed the new front seal the shaft is pretty difficult to turn, the FSM says 2.4 in/lbs or less rotational torque and I'm at about 15. Anybody else experience this? Also I can't remember if there was something between the face of that seal and the pulley, it doesn't look like there is in the FSM diagram. But when I tighten the pulley on it mashes into the rubber face on the seal and doesn't want to turn, am I missing something here?

Pulley on backwards ??

It should not be putting pressure on anything.

Then a Auto Zone Kit I would expect something like this .

You did compare the old parts with new ??

The shaft being tight is definitely from the seal, even with the housing in two pieces with the guts out its tight. I couldn't really compare the new seal to the old because the old one was destroyed during removal. But all the o-rings and snap rings were the correct size and quantity so I assume it's the right kit. I took a pre disassembled photo and I got the pulley on right. I did a forum search and other people mention using the kit from auto zone but with no issue like this.

I was just thinking maybe I didn't press the front seal in far enough, maybe that's why the pulley is contacting it? I can't tell how deep it sat before in the photos I took, could someone tell me how deep that seal sits in relation to the front of the housing? Right now the outer ring on my seal is just flush with the housing

Here's a pic of the front seal on my pump now:

I was looking at this write up using the same kit and in the one pic his front seal looks a little different to me. Seems like the inner rubber part is recessed, whereas mine protrudes some.

I just looked up the part number on the box I got from autozone and it's the correct one for my truck, at least according to the autozone website. Like I said my old seal was so ˟˟˟˟ up after removal a can't compare the two, I'm really at a loss here

I have a pump floating around I will have to look

There needs to be a spacer holding the pulley away from the seal.

Have anything that looks like a really thick washer you have no idea where it came from

I'll have a look around in the morning since I'm at work for the evening. I just finished rebuilding my engine so there's old parts and hardware scattered about, might have got mixed up

After pulling mine apart your seal is either not seated fan enough or it is the wrong one.

there is a shoulder on the shaft that must protrude through the seal

The welded side of the pulley rides against this .

When things are like this the seal does not touch the pulley and the shaft spins free

I was thinking of the spacer on something else.

If you need a picture let me know and I will try and find the camera

If you can get a photo that would help. I'm pretty sure I got it seated all the way, outer ring of the seal is about 1/16 past flush now. I wonder if somehow the wrong seal ended up in the kit I got

It would not surprise me

You can see the shoulder on the shaft the pulley rides on

finally got a chance to stop by autozone and look at another rebuild kit. Sure enough it had a different seal in it than the one I got. Lucky me, now I get to do it over again this weekend.
