I'm considering buying an 89 4 runner with a bad power steering pump.

How much will the part cost to replace and the approx cost of labor?

Is it easy to replace? Is it something I can do myself?

Would the steering still work, just not power assisted?

 

PS pump rebuilt is like $200 without core

-Yes the steering will still work, unassisted. For stock tires not a big deal, but runnin large tires will be more substantial effort wise. Not so much while in motion but like weaving thru parking lots and whatnot...

-Yes, you can swap out or rebuild it yourself if you're confident in your abilities and have a manual available(online or hard copy)

 

I bought a used one from a junkyard for $25 and been running it without any issues.

 

The fix is easy to do, and should only take you a couple of hours or less. I have done two on 22re's and on a 3vze, all were easy and didn't take to long to complete. You do not want to drive that thing around with out power steering, your truck was designed to have power steering and it will not be safe with out it properly working.

Just replaced mine in 30 minutes..... In my troubleshooting thread.(Maybe a couple pages back, lol). 81$ for a returned OEM pump, used for 30 Miles before rolled! (poor guy). From toyota, HUGE cost... but yes, you can get I believe Altrom for 99$ from Napa, 90$ core and you'll need fluid(I used Lucas as it was recommended to me) and YOU MIGHT need the O-Ring in the Return line Elbow that goes in the top of the Pump(New pumps don't come with that elbow or Vacuum Port(over 200$ for that, don't mess it up, lol... ACTUALLY... another 'yard' item, IMHO!) The o-ring is 6$ and they NEVER have them in stock. So think ahead if the one you have now is leaking from there,....the o-ring is bad.

If you need the part number for the o-ring, let me know, I have it.(not sure if it's same for 89 though...and not sure if yours is a 6cyl????? ).

 

I just replaced mine this weekend, took about an hour to do (fought with the pully for a little bit). Literally takes like 5 basic tools. Picked mine up from oreillys for 59 bucks after I took the core back. Turnin better than new haha.
