I have a 89 4runner 3.0 and the power steering is leaking bad just can't tell where exactly it's coming from thou , anybody know what usually gives to make them leak ? Looks like there's the reservoir and to lines running to it ?

 

I experienced the same thing with my 1992 3vze. I think it is common for the seals in the pump to wear down and start leaking. I bought a PS pump rebuild kit and found some excellent threads here that described the rebuild process. As I recall the kit is not that expensive, and it solved the problem for me.

I had to reseal my pump and replace the pressure hose

 

Spray it down with brake cleaner. If you're getting spray, it's from a high pressure line. If it's drips, it's likely a low pressure line. Seal replacement on the pump are in the FSM...

 

Ok gonna try this tomorrow. So sounds like there's only three places it could be leaking , the high pressure hose , the low pressure hose , and the seals inside the pump ?

 

And don't forget the obvious, the gear box. Very common for them to leak

 

yep, my gear box had been leaking pretty badly. I put a bottle or so of that lucas stuff in there with no joy, ended up replacing the gear box. There is a dude a few miles from me that remans them for a decent price. That's about all he does and is very knowledgable about them.

They sell kits to replace all the seals in there and the fsm shows how to do it, but it looked like a can of worms I didn't feel like opening at the time.

It is pretty easy to replace the gear box itself though.

Not sure what your idea of pricey is but its pretty cheap at the dealer. $40 or so

 

Well I meant that the a reman. pump is expensive. $40 for a rebuild kit is pretty good. Thanks.
