I'm replacing my power steering gear in my 1988 4runner. I got the part from advance and it looks very close to the original but the housing seems too long. When I took out the old one it didn't seem there was much room between coupling and the gear housing worm shaft. Towards the firewall on the steering shaft there is a nut and spine situation that appears I could possibly loosen and then compress the shaft to get more room but in none of the threads I read before I attempted this repair did anyone mention doing this. Is The gear wrong or do I just put it in and push the column together to give myself the room I need. I attached to pictures. The first shows the old gear on the left and the new one on the right so you can see what I'm talking about. The other pic shows the spine thing with the nut that I was trying to explain on the steering shaft.

In this day and age it is quite possible to get anything in the correct box.

Are all the important parts the correct size??

The shafts are the correct diameter ??

The mounting holes are in the correct location and size??

Looking closer at the pictures it is not even the same housing .

Was 1988 a change over year that changed in mid year .

Was something different swapped into your truck

There should be enough adjustment in the shaft if all else works.

Could be there are several vendors Toyota used .

As this is a little on the expensive side make sure it will work .

Ok. I was a bit tired and frustrated when I was writing the op, so I probably didnt write everything I was thinking/seeing. The shafts look the same. The housing definitely looks different as you noted, but the possibility of different vendors was what I was thinking. The mounting holes look identical.... so when you say "there should be enough adjustment in the shaft if all else works," that makes me think the nut in pic two can be loosened and the steering shaft adjusted to help this new one fit. Thats what I will try. Basically when im messing with brakes and steering, I like to be pretty damn sure since those arent systems you like to discover arent working correctly as you are driving down the road. Thanks for the advice. One last thing, there is a third fitting on the new housing which does not correspond to anything on the original. I dont know if this is just an air bleed fitting which is somehow builtin to the original steering gear in a different way, but there is not another hose or any kind in the truck for me to connect to. Im going to take another pic of this flare fitting so you can see it because my hand is in the way of it in the original picture.

You can see the lil flare fitting at the top of the housing. In the background the original steering gear doesnt have this fitting.

There are 2 different styles.
