Passenger side oil leak

For a long time now there has been an oil spot under my truck when I park it. I cleaned it up really good today and noticed that it was coming from the passenger side right around the starter. My question is, what is right there that could be leaking engine oil? I know it's not the oil pressure sending unit, it's back further than that. Any suggestions that you have will be thoroughly looked into.

I had a feeling that's what you were talking about.

Anyway, if it's further back than the sending unit (towards the tranny and all), seems to me it would be coming from up top.......like the valve cover. Maybe even the lower manifold, but I'd think you'd have running problems were there a leak at that gasket. You could try spraying some powdered athlete's foot spray on the motor. The oil will leave a trail from it's source. And, the spray is easy to clean off later.

Wow! I'll use the spray trick! That's a good one, thanks!!! I don't think it a valve cover. It could be that plate on the back of the head but it seems to be tight. It's only about half a quart every oil change so it's tough to find. I'm gonna clean on it some more and spray it down with powder. Thanks for the trick!!!

there's no oil behind that plate on the back of the head FYI just coolant and exhaust gases

my money is on the valve cover gasket; the semicircle on the rear more specifically

I've changed it once but I'll do it again just to be sure. Thanks for the info on that plate.

Ok.... so now that it's clean I figured out that it's coming out from around the clutch fork boot. None coming from the hole at the bottom of the trans where it meets the block...looks like it's the rear main.

That might actually be gear oil from your transmission. The input shaft seal going bad.

just a suggestion

while you're in there and have the trans removed, replace the input shaft on the trans too

it's only about $4 or $5, and will take maybe 10 extra minutes

if it lets loose and starts leaking later on, you'll have to drop the trans all over again just to replace it

it's also a good time to inspect the clutch

haha

great minds think alike

but when my trans input seal let loose, it slung a TON of gear oil out of the clutch fork boot, and not a drop came near the engine block thoguh

It's engine oil. It's about held a quart low every oil change and the trans is never low.
