Parts truck, good idea?
Been a while since I've posted on here, but my truck is needing some love and I'm trying to find an economical way of getting parts.
I have found what I believe to be a decent parts truck, some highschool kid bought a 90 reg cab 5spd 4cyl for a mudder, and ran out of money. Its lifted and engine out, minimal rust etc, halfway decent tires from the pics.
I would use: bed, idler arm, fluid reservoirs, fuse box, mirror, torsion bars, maybe leaf springs (to make bastard pack), misc bolts and nuts. Then refurb the hubs etc for spares or sale. Also waering some nice rims I could probably sell.
Parts truck wouldn't have been my first though except for the fact that I can't find any beds for sale and I have this possibly wishful thinking idea that I could clean up and sell a lot of the parts that I don't need.
I should probably mention that the truck is selling for $2k right now and he said "I am pretty motivated to sell if you make me a reasonable offer".
So two questions, one opinion and one factual:
Factual: Will parts be interchangeable between a 90 and a 94, both 5spd 4cyl 4x4s? Most importantly the bed?
Opinion: Is this a reasonable idea, given the parts I need and the idea of selling parts?
Thanks guys

Hi there, just happend on your thread and thought I'd throw you my 2 cents. Parts trucks are great if you need a bunch of stuff, have it all in 1 place as long as its still on the truck and in good shape. Not sure on parts interchage, I don't think they changed all that much. Though 2gs seems quite high for a truck with no motor. I doubt ur going to get close to that selling parts off it. Try lowballing him, take off the parts you need and resell it as a parts truck. Good luck

Way to much money !!
Does the engine come with ?? Or most of the engine that can still be found.
Parts truck in the $300.00 to $500.00 the higher amount if it starts and drives.
That is my theory .
Be warned start with one in no time you will have 3 or 4 People keep giving them to you and you hate to say no.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I'm probably not going through with it, the bed style does not match mine.
The engine does come with, not that it matters now.
But I am interested on the price thoughts put forward.
highonpottery you say that that is the price you would ask for a running vehicle??? Around here a running reg cab 90 starts at about 3500 and thats for an auto v6. I guess the southeast does not have as many old yotas floating around as california does.

yeah, definitely depends on location. to me, after Cash for Clunkers I see most running cars starting at $1500-2k even if it's got body damage and trashed interior. If it doesn't run, definitely less than $1500 and it better be a CLEAN vehicle if you're going to fetch over $900.

If it has a decent lift kit, Bambi bars, and good tires, $1500 is an okay deal if you have use for them. Not sure about interchangeability of parts, but I believe the mounts an bell housings should match for motor and transmission. The rest can be solved with a sawzall if you're determined and they don't match up with the cab but really want to use them. If the bed's still good you can always part it out for 300-500. Up to you though. Personally, I hate buying a basket case. You never really know how much was done correctly and how much got half-assed.

Hmm. I went and had a look at it today, Half assed is probably the most polite way to describe this highschooler's project... I wonder where his pictures came from.
Thanks for the advice guys.
On the price thing, i searched all the local craigslist locations and the lowest priced yota i could find was a wrecked 87 for $1500. I apparently need to move to the west coast.

I just paid $930 for the '91 V6 donor truck for my 5 speed swap. It was more than I wanted to pay but it is a complete although a little rough truck with a bad motor. In my area it seems $800 to $1200 is the asking price in the ad. If you can drive to Tennessee I have seen running trucks on this site for $2k. Looks like all the cheap ones are gone right now.
