Overheating Advice

I want to upgrade my cooling system on my 22re. Any ideas on a radiator upgrade or elec fan setup?

On a pretty steep highway grade my lil 4cyl seems to slow down and get hot. My truck almost redlined it's temp gauge doing 45mph on a 6% grade for about 20-25 mins

You can get a 3 core all metal radiator from www.radiatorbarn.com for about 175.00, i have one on my 86 4Runner. You can add an electric fan it you want, but i think there more trouble than there worth. The stock fan is more than enough to cool the engine provided that the rest of the cooling system is kept in good condition.

Most people don't have trouble with 22re cooling. Might be better to look into maintenance (coolant flush, clean out radiator fins) first and then upgrades if that doesn't do it.

I got a a spectra 3 row radiator from Autozone in Denver for about $140. I would also look into replacing the fan clutch as well. A Toyota dual stage thermostat wouldn't hurt either.

ya something is wrong with your cooing system. They are designed to cool the engine under any condition. Like everyone else says check the fan clutch and get a new rad if it is looking crumby.

I put in a aftermarket 3 row radiator, think I paid around $140 for it. Have a 195 T-stat and pulling up long grades in 3rd at 4K I usually will hold steady at around 205 on the temp gauge.

I've had alot of cooling issues with my 22re. I figured out what the issues were:
1. The radiator cap wouldn't hold more than 7psi, stock is ~13psi
2. The fan clutch was bad. It took longer to figure this out because it had resistance. However, I was watching the engine run, and it looked like it was spinning kind of slow. I grabbed it, it stopped, and then let go. It very slowly began to turn. 45$ from NAPA for a lifetime warranty.

those are my thoughts on cooling.

I'd probably go with an AISIN fan clutch

I got an all aluminum radiator from ebay for 120 and it bolted up perfectly and cools very well.

I agree that the Aisin is better. But then again, its a fan clutch. The fan clutch is not on my list of Toyota Only Parts.

Gonna put a new fan clutch in since I came up on one, but has anyone ever added a supplemental "pusher" style fan in front of the radiator?

Seems like a slim fan could go in between the radiator and condenser or even just remove the condenser all together if you don't need AC.

Think I'll look around for one that will fit in front of the radiator. Can't find any threads on this, anyone ever done it? Seems it would be great for low airflow when crawling.

I am in the same boat, just rebuilt a 22re and need to have my radiator cleaned up or replace it.

Would you guys clean up a direct fit aftermarket radiator, or just get a new one?

Also, what should a good fanclutch feel like in your hands? Mine seems solid with no play.

I installed a secondary temp gauge recently. Next time I scream up a grade pinned in 3rd gear I'll report back what the actual temps get to!

My 22RE started getting hot on long climbs, and after going through the fan clutch, t-stat, rad cap, flush, etcetera I finally grabbed a new radiator from radiatorbarn and that solved the problem. Tried to get the 3-row, but they were out of stock so I went 2-row HD and it's working out great. I'm pulling long passes in 2nd-3rd gear and staying cool as can be.

If your radiator is in halfway decent shape (fins are good, mounts aren't giving out and so on) then I'd look into having a good rad shop do a flush. Much less dinero than a new rad, and should get you back in business. Mine was falling apart, otherwise I would have done this too.

Where's a good place to place a secondary temp gauge sending unit? Radiator fins?
