Output shaft play confusion

I hope that someone has experienced this and can help because i'm stumped.

since buying my 87 22re 5spd 4x4 a year ago there has been a driveline vibration that I quickly tracked down to play in the rear output flange. I tried torquing the nut which didn't help, and I eventually replaced the rear output bearing. The play is still there though and I can't figure out why. Any ideas? There isn't a huge amount of play, but you can definitely feel it and even see the flange dust shield move in relation to the transfer case.

I appreciate any help.

How much play are you talking about. All gear boxes have a little slop.
