Well, the other night I was browsing eBay, not even looking for anything in particular. I came across some mid to late 80's used 22re parts, and noticed they were all from the same seller. So I sent him a message, just out of curiosity; "Hey, do you have any mid to late 80's 22re thermostat housings, the type with the threaded temp probe on the top of it?". Well, about 5 minutes later, he sent me a message back; "I sure do, $25 shipped". Well I jumped on it, and guess what came in the mail today

Sencor and all!!!

200k miles of road grime thrown in at no charge

I'm going to take it to work tomorrow, tap the hole just a little bit bigger to fit one of the adapters, and hopefully install it tomorrow afternoon, cause I'm suppose to get off work early tomorrow anyway!

I know, doesn't seem like much, but hell, I'm syk'ed about it!
Just to let you know before you do this, you are wasting your time and you just wasted $25. The sending unit for any temperature gauge must go before the thermostat otherwise your readings will be incorrect. Just look where Toyota put theirs.

but i dont think the few inches between that one^^ and the one on the manifold will be enough to give you a different reading. i mean even though the fluids are seperated by the stat, the heat isnt stopped by the stat it will heat the fluid on the other side just the same. it would make sense to me that you would get a proper reading with that one as well

The temperature is not the same, maybe when it is fully warmed up but the gauge will not move until the thermostat is open and you would not know if the engine is running hot if the thermostat sticks closed.

JamesD is correct. That's not the place for a temp guage.

That sensor that sits on the top of the t-stat housing is a temp switch for the EFI. I posted up a TSB regarding that part (and even the cold start time switch) a while back. Let me see if I can find it, but I'm pretty sure it's for the electrically controlled style auxiliary air valve....I think

I found the thread I posted the TSB, but the link to it was hosted by Abemeister on his server and is now dead. So, I can't show it. I still have it in my email, though.

Anyway, after rereading said thread, I stated it was related to the fuel pressure up valve somehow and not the AAV. Hmmm....damn. Now I gotta find that email.

Okay....I found the email. This temps switch (#2) definitely activates the fuel pressure up system. However, does anyone know how to copy/paste a PDF picture/diagram directly to the site?

"PrintScreen", open Paint and paste, save as a .jpeg, upload to PhotoBucket, then post

yeah I know it won't register till the truck warms up and the t-stat opens, but I still have the original installed and working, so I'll be able to judge if the t-stat sticks closed and causes an overheat. I would just like to be able to more closely watch my temps on a daily basis, or when I'm sitting idling for a while after the truck's already warmed up. I like to see a needle pointing at numbers and info better than just looking at a needle somwhere between C and H; I'd install a digital fuel gauge that told me how many gallons I really had if I knew how, lol

It doesn't appear that I have the "paint and paste" option. I'm using Avant browser and Adobe 6. Is this option something particular to a browser or is it with Adobe?

Regardless of the operation of a temp guage installed there, my question is what will be the effect of not having the #2 temp sensor for the fuel press. up valve. Wait and see, I guess?

Are you refering to bleeders current setup or on a truck that actually uses that sender?

Well, either I guess. Does bleeder's vehicle not come equipped with that style of thermo housing from the factory or something? Admittedly, I'm not quite up to par on what all he's doing or what he has. I just kinda jumped in the middle.........like I usually do.

My 86 RTE has TWO sensors in that piece. Weird.

On the later modle 22re's, there's no sencor there. It's the exact same thermostat housing, just no temp probe there. Mounts the same, same angle, same hose size, just the original on my 91 has no sencor there.

and yeah, the RET's had 2 sencors. I looked for one of those too with the intension of just plugging whatever one off I didn't use, but I had a hard enough time locating an older 22re, much less an RTE

Well it's not getting installed today; didn't have a tap at work to open the threads up on the housing a little bit like needed. One of the mechanics at work took it home though; he's got a HUGE tap and die set at his house, and he says he'll tap her out a little bigger and go ahead and thread the adapter in. And if he still has problems, he said he'll weld on a nut with the right thread pitch, so it's a win/win situation since he's doing it for nothing the guys at work are so cool...

so it's resceduled till the weekend now

Well, I guess posting up the TSB is moot, then......

I wasn't sure what year they redesigned the system. so....

well dangit... THAT guy didn't have anything, so one of the other techs took it home with him this weekend and he said he'll get it straign't out and working, lol

so it took my months to find this housing, now it's going to take me another month to get the probe to fit in it
