So basically I just swapped my 3.0 V6 motor in my 1992 truck because the headjaskets went in the old one. Its all together and running again. Picked up a code reader and plugged it in and its not showing anything, just says "no codes to be retrieved". We did use the code reader on my brothers ranger and it worked on there and on a few other vehicles since then but I can't get it to throw any on my truck. The oil light is on faintly not while its idiling but when you rev it flickers on and theres quite a bit of condensation coming out of the tail pipe which maybe isn't a bad thing but it wasn't like that before. If anybody who has replaced their motor before and has any clue what the problem might be any help is very much appreciated. Thank you

 

Oil light at any time is BAD. Usually it would be the opposite tho and be on at idle and flicker away once revved. I would suggest replacing the sending unit if the gauge is known to be good.

 

Generally on older toyota OBD1 systems you had to put power to the connectors from an outside source like the battery or cig lighter. If theres a little plug on the connector for a power cord thats prob why. But there may very well be no codes in it if the scanner is providing the power needed. Have you checked oil pressure with a mehcanial gauge? Hook it up where the oil pressure switch/or sending unit usually goes and rev it up and what not and see what the oil pressure is. I forget off the top of my head what the oil pressure is supose to be at idle but any manual will tell you. If theres a sudden variation in pressure as rpms increase theres an issue. The pressure switch/sending unit may be bad. Does you truck have an oil pressure gauge in the dash? Check the oil.... is it full? Is it milky?

 

Allright I just went out and ran it and, when its idiling the light comes on very dim and bright in intervals sort of, and when you rev it its on. The checked the oil before and after before it was a nice golden brown and after it had like ah hmm a bit of a darkness to it.

 

Well if you hook a mehcanical gauge to it and the pressure is good then its prob the sending unit.

You mean smoke? What color is it? What times and or rpms does it happen. You said you just did the HG and thats it right? Whats the temp outside? If its bellow 50 upon start up its gonna seem like smoke....

 

I didn't actually do the headgaskets, just got a motor and took the old one out and put the new one in. Exhaust smoke looks fine, and funny enough we are actually sitting right at 50 right now.

 

yea once it warms up that "cold smoke" will be gone.

 

Sorry but I just want to double check that the allen key (Looks like maybe an 8mm) beside the oilfilter in the sending unit.

 

oil pressure sending unit is a sensor that sits next to the oil filter. Its a single wire.

Okay so Instead of making a new thread I figured I would just use this one, I changed the sending unit, and it worked no oil light!!! Then I jumped for joy thinking I was finally done but then I came back inside for a bit then went outside put the hood on it to take it for a little test drive and it won't start it just cranks and doesn't fire. UGGGGHHHHHHH

check for fuel and spark

 

Did you disconnect something while you were messin with the sending unit? recheck yourself. Spray some carb cleaner in the intake and see if it will start. Check for spark as well.. usually try it stright from the coil... did you plug the ignitor connector(s) or the distributor connecter?
