Now I have a problem!!!

I own a 1990 4runner 4x4 w/ a v6. I was changing my half shafts on the front and ran into an issue. I removed the nuts that hold on the hub cover and then removed the cone washers. Well in getting aggrivated after 3 hours of trying to remove these washers I resulted to hitting the ends of the studs. Just like you guys said, the washers came flying right off. Now the studs that I hit with the 3lb hammer are bent and mashed on the ends and can no longer be used. I have searched for a thread on changing the studs out but found nothing. Has any of you guys did this before? Is it hard to do? the new studs I was looking to buy are at the attached website. Thanks for the help in advance.

use a punch next time and leave the nut at the end to protect the threads and keep them from swelling. put anti-seize on the cone washers before you put them back on.

I tried using a dye and that didn't work the ends are extremely mushrumed out and one of the studs actually has a curve to it. Any thought on difficulty to change out.

you might want to try using a hack saw to cut off about 1/8", their should be plenty of tread left and will make it easier to re-cut the stud. Please next time don't use a steel hammer, use a dead blow hammer or punch. Disapointed that there's no pics.

stud extractor sockets will grip the studs and allow you to remove them Vise grips will work, but that's an aggravating way to do it.

In the future, If you use a large diameter brass drift (punch) you can almost always get them apart without damaging the studs.

Good luck

was wondering if you could maybe hit only the mushroomed part with a file or dremel to make it round again and then try to re-thread it again ?
