Hello! I am new to yotatech so I will give a quick run down of my yota.

88' yota pickup regular cab, 22re, 5spd, 4x4, (rust free frame and nearly rust free cab and bed)

So now my problem. I purchased the truck a few months ago never hearing it run. Previous owner rebuilt engine about 500 miles ago, truck ran great for him until the alternator died. After replacing the alternator the truck would crank but not start. Found that the fuel pump was not kicking on. Replaced fuel pump. Truck still wouldnt start. This is when I took ownership. Fuel pump wasnt kicking on because the AFM wasnt telling it to kick on. Repaired that problem. Truck now starts hard, but idles decent, if you open the throttle the truck stalls. I have chased wiring all over this thing, had full interior out, repaired wires behind dash, both harnesses along the floor, and some under the hood. I have tried swapping out AFM, TPS, and ECU. All parts were removed from running truck. I found that the truck wouldnt even start with the known good ECU. When unplugging the AFM the truck stumbles now and can be revved up but its dumping way to much fuel, exhaust manifold gets red hot! I have spent many hours chasing wires, testing relays, measuring resistance. I am tired of chasing my tail. Can someone please help me!

What you are describing is a VAFM issue. You didn't removed the screws that go into it, did you?

 

No I didn't. Symptoms have changed a little tho. Truck won't start as of past night. Cranks and fires for the first couple revolutions but stalls. Also a little fact I should have disclosed in my first post, the check engine light will not illuminate regardless of what I do. I put a known good bulb in the cluster to. Made it to the salvage yard this weekend and I was able to get my hands on three main EFI relays, one circut opening relay, and a VAFM. I replaced all three main pieces to the puzzle and still nothing. Any ideas??? Truck is almost ready otherwise. Getting frusterated!!! Any hints, tips, or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

 

Stupid question: did you make sure all plug wires are in the right place?

 

Do you know if the fuel filter has been replaced ?, if not then replace it. another thing to check is the timing if you can get it to run long enough.

 

stop with electrical and start thinking mechanical. Hows your compression? is the firing order correct? Is the timing correct? is the cam timed with the crank right?

 

No question is a stupid question at this point. I have not checked plug wires or timing only because the truck idled smooth and what little bit I was able to rev it up it never miss fired. I did replace the fuel filter about 2 weeks ago. My check engine light still doesn't come on. Does this concern anyone? I feel that the ecu isn't doing its job. Thanks for the help guys.

 

It's more likely a wiring harness issue as they are getting old & the heat & age combine to make then brittle/prone to breaking.

Also thinking it might possibly be related to your cold timing switch.

 

Cold timing switch? This is new to me. Any chance you can tell me what exactly it does and where it is. I pulled the complete interior out and repaired some wires behind the dash and a bunch that run along the floor.

Hey guys, I'm trying to get some answers from some where. I am new to this forum and not able to creat a new thread unless I have a number of posts first. Read my issue below and let me know if you have any suggestions. Thank you for anything you can say to help. Good luck Wernhersey!

My 88 toyota 4runner when it's cold, winter, or in the morning in summer, it either does not start (winter) and if starts (summer/winter) does not want to stay on. I have tested, checked and cleaned: air intake, cold start sensor, air control valve, the sensor located after the air filter, forgot the name...all according to results are good...I do not know what else to do. I have to stay in the truck for a few minutes, at least 5, in order for it to stay on, on its own, very low idle almost stalling. Once it's warmed up, it has a good idle. If turned off and then on within one minute while warm, cranks very low idle like I just cold started it and I have to accelerate it in order to get back to normal idle again... Do any of you guys have had a situation like this? I have read similar issues, checked and tested what was recommended and still have the problem. Thank you in advance. I hope I can get this nightmare out of my way soon. I have dealt with it for the last 4 years...

 

I once had an issue with the truck not starting. Replaced the circuit opener relay with a new one and never had any issue ever since. I replaced it first with a used one, but it was not good. Perhaps the one you got got wet or something and it is not giving any solution. Try to by pass it using a paper clip, i did that in order for my truck to start and get to the auto part store, then i installed it.
