I just picked up an 88 4runner and am working to get it running well. It has a 22re, manual tranny, and everything else is stock. When I got it, the timing was way off and it had no power when accelerating. I fixed the timing. Still no power. The idle is fine and will rev up fine when in neutral. When I barely press the gas pedal, the truck will pick up speed very slowly(obviously). When pressing the pedal more it is like it is bogging down with little to no acceleration and makes a popping noise(I think this is coming from near air filter area). By bogging down I mean that the engine does not increase RPM's and makes the bogging noise
I have pulled codes and it gave me the 51 code. I cleaned out the throttle body and tested the TPS. I even purchased a used TPS to try out to see if that was the problem. NO JOY. I tried disconnecting the cat to see if that was causing it. NOPE. So here I sit lost.

On another note, what is the white hex screw thing connected to the EFI? I know it has something to do with the vacuum, right. I can't find anything about that in the chilton. Thanks a ton in advance!!

 

I think the white hex nut your referring too is the power steering/ac idle up actuator..

 

Do you still have code 51 after adjusting timing? You probably advanced the timing and your engine started to knock as a result, giving you the code 51. back it off to 10degrees BTDC and reset ECU and see if you get code again.

The power loss issue can be caused by many things. You have to go through and check all of the components that give the ECU information such as VAFM, Engine Temp sensor... etc.

Check your compression to btw. I'm no mechanic but if it seems to rev fine without load and bog down with load, could be compression related.

 

Awesome, thanks for the replies! I have gone thru several things trying to find out what is causing this problem. I have yet to recheck the codes, but I have checked the VAFM and that is good.

I have placed the timing to 5degrees BTDC. Idle is good and when I increase rpm's just slightly it's fine, but when increasing them significantly I now get the jumpy engine and (not sure how to explain it) up and down reving(?)

Tomorrow I am going to check the TPS again, now that i know how to do it correctly, lol. I will reset the ECU and check for codes too.

Oh and check the compression too.
