new thirds

Lots of good info on here, also some that I don't agree with. So here's my couple of pennies.
If you have the money already set aside for the 5.29's/ARB/compressor then go that route and put the ARB in the rear. Wait for a while to get a locker for the front end. You'll be able to better wheel a double locked rig if you've "cut your teeth" on one with a single locker, just like you can wheel better with a single locker if you learned on a rig that was open front and rear. If you feel you need another locker down the road you'll have time to save for one. I agree with 89silverpu in that the ARB in the rear (since it's an 8" third) will be better for you in the long run if you end up purchasing an 85 year model later on. You then have the option of putting that ARB in the front or rear where as if you had purchased an ARB for the front then you'd be selling it to one of us (dibs!!) to recoupe some money.
I do not however agree that an auto locker in the rear is a bad thing or that it will cause stress/wear/breakage. You learn pretty quickly how to drive with an auto locker and for the most part I can't even tell it's back there. Heck I like that little "cheap" locker so much that I'm hoping to drop one in the front next month.
I hope this helps you make a decision.

200$ more? Hell I'd get it but then I run an auto locker (Aussie, which is about the same as a Lcokrite) in the rear of my 89 4runner and ran the same one in the rear of my 86 pickup and I like them. That and you'd save time and money by getting it now. If you do wait then later on you'll have to order the locker (and pay shipping) and then take time to drop the third (on the IFS it's a little time intensive), install the locker, check tolerances and reinstall the third.
Yoder that qoute right there from TOYOTA 1 will be the first thing you think when you get stopped somewhere when a front locker would have gotten you past it. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that when it happens you'll be kicking yourself for not dropping the extra 200 bones to get the front locked.
The decision is yours but if it was me and I had the money I'd get it. Just as an example I bought my 8" Aussie and installed it when I did the third swap with lower gears. If I'd have been smart, since I did have the money at the time, I'd have spent the extra 230$ (and shipping) on the 7.5" locker and installed it at the same time. Now when I order it I have to repull the front third and spend a few hours setting up the locker and putting it all back together.
Hind sight is a pain........

yea i order all my stuff from a shop called RPMoffroad. they race baja out in new mexico and what not and have a crap load of sponsors. i always go to them and they can usually get it cheaper than i can. like my tg sliders... i go tehm and teh mounting kit for about 50 bucks cheaper than ordering off the internet. and now there startin to cut me deals here and there since all of my paychecks go to them.

Are you planning on going up in tire size? I thought 5.29s wern't great as far as strength goes. If you're only on 33s wouldnt 4.88s be sufficient? Might be able to save some bucks with a used set of 4.88s? Idk though I've never looked at prices.

I am running front and rear Aussie lockers in my '81. If I had the option of a selectable locker (ARB) I would put in up front. I had to drive home with this in the passenger seat a few weeks ago:

Put it 4WD and I tell you what, driving a locked front end on pavement sucks. It is not noticeable on trails. .
I have been pretty much been DD the truck for the last two months, I only noticed the rear locker in tight turns in a parking lot, no biggie.
I would say put the ARB up front. That way if you ever need to drive in 4WD during the winter you still get the option of the open diff up front. The locked front end likes to pull the direction you don't want to go...

I didn't realize you would be driving in snow...I don't know about driving a locked front diff in the snow, but I would assume that would not be optimal for highway/ street driving in the snow.
And just to clarify what the above poster said about 5.29's, they ARE NOT weak. Almost everyone running tires larger than 35's use 5.29's...gears are all about the set up as posted above earlier. And as far as 5.71's being weak, read this.... http://gearinstalls.com/410suck.htm

Yoder what shop is building these thirds for you? I'm in Mathews, VA and need gears soon. Where is the shop? Would you be comfortable telling me some prices?
