new alternator...truck won't start
guys i really need your help with my 1993 toyota pickup 4x4 (v6 3vze 3.0 motor). first it gives me Battery and brake light lights on the dash. then it dies on the street. so i took off the alternator and checked at autozone. it went failed. so i repaced the "brush set" and still it went failed on the test.
so i ordered a new one on ebay and hooked it up. now it cranks but does not start. i checked all the fueses under the hood. everything seems to be working. i need this truck running, need help ..........................

Use your timing light to confirm the plugs are firing, and if not, that there is a pulse to the distributor.
No timing light? No excuse for that; one costs less than a fifth of what you paid for that alternator.
If each of the plugs is firing, replace the fuel return line on the Fuel Pressure Regulator with a tube to a bucket. Crank engine; while cranking fuel should flow freely through that line.

thanks scope103, i never adjusted the timing and i'm going to buy the timing light. i did some reserch online and all the cars they have, are running and they adjust the timing. since mine is not running how do i do it. ( is it keep cranking the starter?). maybe this is bumb question, but i don't wonna make it worst. thanks

The timing light flashes when plug number 1 (or whichever plug wire it's clipped to) fires. All an engine needs is fuel, air and spark. Since you might have damaged the ignition system replacing the alternator, looking for that flash is a quick way to see if the plugs are firing when you crank it.
You can also check to see if the timing is in the approximate neighborhood when cranking, but it's tricky to set it perfectly. But it will definitely run with imperfect timing.
Got spark? Next you check for fuel.

Did you follow the manual to reinstall the distributor? http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...13distribu.pdf (especially that "new o-ring" part?) Even if you followed it carefully, it's easy to miss by one tooth on the helical gear, and that will leave you 28° off. Then it definitely won't start; you could be so far off you can't even see the timing mark.
So, yes. You will need to get a timing light, and you will need to learn how to set the timing any time you do anything (like remove!) the distributor.

I agree it sounds like the distributor was reinstalled improperly. Set the engine on TDC and put the rotor pointing to #1 contact in dist. cap. In the future, always note exactly where the rotor is pointing before removing the distributor. Good luck.
