New 3.0: Lack of Power

My truck absolutely has no balls. It's a 93 Pickup with the 3.0 v6. Well first off my fan exploded. It's a new engine with 1500 miles on it. I had to advance the timing all the way to have any power. It was like 40 degrees adv. I dOnt know what exactly to do. Any advice would help.

From my perspective the 3.0l lacks balls in the first place, however with only 1500 miles on the motor and the ignition advaced it would seem there is a definate problem. For use to help, a more discripted explanation of the events and actions that lead to your problem would really help. Other wise any response would be a shot in the dark gess. For example, has it been this way sence you replaced the motor or has it been slowly getting worse. Does the lack of power occure while engine cold or hot or both. more info needed. Noises, vehical feel etc. Check engine light and codes? Smells, raw fuel? cyclinder miss? Look forward to getting back to this posting.

Yes it has a new fuel filter and it's a five speed. It does smell very rich. The problems started right after the fan exploded. It has an engine code but and I know that it is the knock sensor. Which would explain having to advance timing. It doesnt lag in and out it sits at 850 warm. It finally gains balls after 4500 rpm.

Since the engine has been replaced, i'd start by checking really, really well for vacuum leaks, then check the AFM. It didn't do this before the new engine, did it?

Check your TPS also, it affects your power.

To test your TPS just unplug it. If its better without then you've or a bad or out of adjustment TPS. I'm doubting that your issue however.

If you have a code for the knock sensor, and engine light is on, the computer is going to retard the timing electronically, set it to run rich, and the truck is not going to have any power. You need to fix the knock sensor!

I agree, the 3.0 is slow in general. I changed to an airtube, which helped, but what really showed some improvement, was a complete fuel system flush cleaning. Ran much better. Just an observation.

OH, totally missed this. 93toyrunner2 was correct. Fix this and you problem will go away immediately. Hopefully it's just unplugged. If it's a broken knock sensor wire (very common) you'll have to take the plenum and intake manifold off to change the wire. It's only about $10 part. If you have a knock sensor code, this is your problem.

The computer retards timing to ZERO degrees BTDC when no signal is received from the knock sensor. That fully explains the power issue.

In addition I suspect you had some vacuum hose damage from the exploding fan. Another reason for power loss.

Everyone says the 3VZE has no balls, but it is tons more torquey than the 22RE. The fact that it is a 150 horsepower engine in a 4000 pound (4x4) truck has a lot to do with that.

What kind of resistor can I put on that knock sensor? I ran my wire the wrong way when I rebuilt it an also now I'm having issues with my exhaust. The manifolds are glowing red and it's getting decent flow out the exhaust. Possible plugged glass pack?i checked the timing on the cams and it's good. The distributor checked our as well done a full tune up and still nothing. I'm so stumped. I gotta get power before I can go play in the trails again.

The tune up helped a wee bit. Had a cracked distributor cap from the fan. I installed a 14" electric fan as a puller. Works great btw. I checked vacuum lines as well didn't seem to have an issue there.

No resistor that I'm aware of. You need to pull your plenum and intake manifold and install a new wire. It's about $10 from Toyota. I didn't know that would cause glowing manifolds, which indicates a very rich condition.

Yeah it is very rich. I can't adjust that in anyway being that it's fuel injected can I?
