Need transmission removal tips...mines stuck
Hey,
I have an 88 4runner with the w56 transmission. Im in the middle of pulling that tranny out as thrid gear does not like to work. I've got the transfer case off, the crossmember off, the starter out, all the bolts from the engine to tranny out, and am stuck trying to pull the darn thing off of the engine. I can see very minimal space between the engine and tranny, but it just does not want to budge any farther. Ideas?
Thanks
Tyler

Are you sure you didn't miss a bolt. Also make sure you're pulling it straight, if it's cocked slightly it might bind. Could be some corrosion on the alignemnt pins, maybe try a chisel or prybar bwtween them, but be careful you don't gouge the bell housing, some of them are aluminum and very soft.

Two things:
1) make sure you removed all the bolts.. There are two near the top of the motor, just under where the head contacts the block.
2) If you've got all of them out, it's likely you're stressing the engine/transmisison somehow. You need to have the back of the engine on a jackstand before you unbloted the tranny cross member.. If not, jack it up a little, jack the tranny up a little, and try to take the stress of the input shaft. A little prying doesn't hurt, but it shouldn't take much.

i missed the top bolts when i changed my clutch, yanking and pulling, and then- lightbulb!! top 2 bolts out, it slid right off, make sure you have a tranny jack or someone strong.

I just yanked mine this yesterday, took about 3 hours w/ no tranny jack..... if you have a gap between the block and bellhousing on either side of the vehicle, put a screwdriver in there, then push the rear of the transmission towards the side of the truck with your foot, the screwdriver acts as a folcrum. should pop right off there. good luck! I just had to do my clutch and had the same problem, I had all the bolts out and it still would not budge even when i tried prying it so i hooked a 2” ratchet strap from the rear axle to the transmission gave it a few cranks and she popped right off. My guess was one of the guide pins was rusted tight.
