Need help setting timing on 22re

i have a 87 4runner with 22re that i just rebuilt, ive tried setting the timing but cant get it to 5 degrees btdc, when i jump the connector it does not change the timing at all? the closest i can get it is 12 degrees btdc and that is with the distributor turned all the way to the right? i tried moving the distro one tooth forward and backwards but cant get it dead on?
any help will be very appreciated, Thanks in advance Philip!

Are you sure you aligned the cam and crank correctly when you installed the chain? And did you mess with the throttle position sensor at all?

I assume the motor will run consistently?

did you have the block and head decked? did you compensate for it with a thicker head gasket?

You don't need thicker head gaskets. The amount shaved is so little it just doesn't matter

not always true if the machine shop takes off too much to true the head or block you will have a hard time setting your timing.

the 22ret we just rebuilt was shy and my buddy is going to have order another head gasket we have moved the chain 4 times and advanced the distributor 15 to 25 times to get it to run it runs but not right. it was my buddys fault that he did not ask the specs when he picked up the block and head then ordered the rebuild kit

the cam and crank are aligned correctly, i didnt mess with the throttle sensor yet, and i didnt put a thicker head gasket, i was thinking it could have bin that!
i would have to get a adjustable cam gear to fix that if it is!
after reading alot of the posts i think i am going to try testing and adjusting the tps!
