I had the same problem with the carb on my 87. As soon as the choke kicked down the darn thing wouldn't idle. I ended up getting a rebuilt kit from Napa for $40. It seems like it would be a difficult job but it's really not that bad. It seems the 22r carb as a reputation for wearing itself out. If it's not your AAP it's the choke but either way I would say replace it with a Weber or rebuild it. It took me the better part of a day and alot of looking at the crappy instruction pic that came with the rebuild kit. At the end of the day my stock carb ran great and I didn't have to empty my wallet on a Weber. Remember to get the rivits for the choke housing!!!

my old 22r did that (on a celica) and it was a vacuum diaphram.
it was .12 cents.
but i had to fiddle with it all day. i cleaned and proded, poked and tried everything free. then got a used one, and started swapping out stuff. turned out to be in a circular encasement and the diaphram was cracked.
the donar was good, and after swapping that, i bought a new one, sold the donar carb and my car worked for years till my friend got it impounded.

that car went through the pits of hell and back.
