86 22re code clearing?
Yes I searched, although I'm not very good with computers and might have missed it.
How do you clear the codes out of an 86 22re? Do I have to pull the battery cable, short the T and E1 terminals, pull a certain fuse?
I'm sorry if this has been covered but I couldn't find it.

No, that is what reads the codes, but does not clear them.
Yes, pulling the EFI fuse will kill power to the EFI computer and reset it in a few minutes.

Thanks 4crawler! I've been all over your site for the past few days and must have missed the part about pulling a bat cable.
Since you seem to know a hell of a lot more than I ever will I have a question for you. I have been told to short the T and E1 terminals and start the motor to time it. Is this proper or is it better just to cancel the codes, run it so it can relearn itself and then time it? For that matter since this thing is still surging will the ECU relearn the surge after pulling the cable?
So confusing.......

Clearing the codes is one thing. Setting the timing is another thing, and must be done with the timing jumper installed (5 degrees BTDC). You could check it after driving for a while, but I doubt the ECU re-learning process would change the timing. The ECU basically just re-learns what sort of fuel injector timing adjustments are needed to correct A/F ratios at various throttle and air flow conditions.
For the surging, find out what is causing that and fix it, could be idle speed being set too high or low coolant levels, etc.:

"I just had my 85 xcab/efi smogged. It almost didn’t pass. The CO is fine at both idle and rpm. HC’s are way high at idle (220) but fine at rpm. Truck was tuned prior to test and I did an oil change. I also retarded the timing to 2* static. My air/fuel meter suggests the Ox sensor is functioning properly and it’s an OEM sensor. I’m suspicious it’s the CAT.
Over the last six years the HC’s have been climbing suggesting a slow, progressive failure. Other numbers have also risen, but not as rapidly. Do you have any ideas? The only two devices I’m aware of that control HC’s are the CAT and the PCV. I didn’t change the PCV, and don’t suspect it as a problem. As far as NOx, New Mexico doesn’t test for NOx so I have no idea what the number is. "
Oh so I'll put the T-E1 jumper back in there and time it tonight. I've got a timing light so getting back to 5* BTDC will be easy, I've also got a vaccum tester so I'll test the EGR also. So far I've metered the AFM and the TPS as per your site and after a minor adjustment both are well within specs. I've also read about an Auxillary Air Valve so I can check that also. I do not however understand the coolant level idle thing so it's time to hit your site and do some more reading.
