a truck is like a woman. u don't marry the first one u test drive. most have baggage u don't know about. and the previous owner probably rode the hell out of it. take it for a spin, if u can live with the problems get it cheaper. if not find one better if more expensive. either way you will spend lots of money and feel satisfied once a week. just my .02 my fathers wisdom to all his sons

Yeah, pass on that one. It does sound like it needs some work.
There are a lot of Toyota's out there for sale for that kind of money.
For example:
http://kansascity.craigslist.org/car/369237056.html
I know it's $1000 more (and a pretty long drive), and it's not a P/U, but it's got a 22RE and it's in great shape. These kinds of trucks (4Runners and P/U's) are what you should look for IMO.
There are really good deals out there, just be patient and as stated before, don't fall in love with the truck.

Ugh...yeah, shoes. Look into shipping prices, man. I'm having a vehicle shipped from Texas to Ark. for $800. This '86 is a nice vehicle you'd be real happy with, I'm sure. If not, I'd gladly accept it for an early Christmas present.

Look at it this way:
I paid 3500 for my 87 Runner with, well, who knows how many miles. You could buy this Runner (from the CraigsList link), have it shipped for 500-800 bucks, and it's got a killer sound system (from what the description says). Looks like very little rust, and still spend less than I did on mine. Which by the way, I drove 8 hours round trip to buy.

keep shopping. No telling what kind of shape the diff's, tranny and transfer case are in. With 4x4 it is a crap shoot, unless you know the history. There are plenty of deals out there. Keep looking, you will find one.

My advice- don't buy a vehicle that needs work if you can't do it yourself. If you have to ask why the clutch pedal isn't returning you would probably be in over your head. Sorry if that sounds harsh but I'm just giving it to you straight! If you have a mechanic that you trust then by all means have him look at it and listen to his opinion. But like I said you need to sutract repair costs from KBB value. If the website gives a fair value just take 15% off that.

Jesus christ...why going insulting the mans intelligence? A clutch is not a big thing. He's already done work on his own motor, which is complicated enough. I'll bet he could figure out a clutch real quick.
The word will be soon enough, but if there's no rust at the body chances are there's little to no rust on the frame...which gives something pretty farkin' solid to build on. It's an '89 Toyota truck guys. Unless it's really been beat to hell...and it doesn't look that way....I'll bet the drivetrain is just fine. A little investigating is all it will take. Any used vehicle anyone buys is gonna need some work. I know I've put more money than what it would cost for him to put a brand new motor in into the two 4rnrs I own sans any motor rebuild...just to get them road worthy. Yeah, $1500 is excessive, but I paid $2500 for an '86 that's a rust bucket. Am I sorry I did it, fark no! It's taken a few years, but I've got a solid little mf'r. Plenty of folks have rebuilt a 3vze with good results. (TNRabbit comes to mind. Ask him if he's sorry. I think not.) So what if he has to dump another $1500 even to get a good truck. It's a Yota...and built by him! And I'll bet he could do it.

Minnesota?! Holy crap...that is way out of state. I live in Arkansas, otherwise I'd look at it for ya. As for shipping, I don't know. I could do a little investigating, I just don't how it all works. The folks shipping my wife a vehicle went through a broker. It's coming from Texas for $800....broker fee included.

My father in-law bought my wife an 89 Pickup before we got married and only paid $2500 (was only a year ago), and the truck is in perfect shape. I have had offers to buy it that where over $5000 and turned them down. My advise is there are deals out there to be found, just keep looking and you will find it. Like my 86 pickup I bought for $400 that needed a new engine. I picked up a built 22r for $1000 and dropped it in so I only have $1400 in a good running truck.

my throwdown is this. we're talkin bout shoes guys. he can handle whatever happens. lol.
shoes, srsly keep lookin. even drive around town some with ur eyes out. i found 2 4x4 yotas, one with the 3.4 and one with the 22re, and pretty low mileage, semi cheap, but of course too expensive for me to buy and pay more insurance on.
thats just drivin around. course it was nice cause they were right across the street from each other and on my way to work, but its all bout keepin an eye out.
good luck man. and if u find one, buy it, make it rly awesome, then dont like it anymore.... hehehe.
