Nearly new chain making noise.

Once again i post about my engine noise/chain/valves. Ok so today i adjusted the valves and boy she sounds like a quite pretty little sewing machine now. Very quiet valves and performs alil better too. Anywho shes still got chain nosie bad. As i was bumping the engine over with a starter jump wire to adjust valves i could see the chain slinging and pinging. Whats the issue? Me and my dad did the chain job about 40k miles ago if less than that so what? Any ideas. It does not do it all the time. About 50% of the time of engine running.

The nuts holding the valve cover on should be less than 5ft-lbs- not too much more than finger tight. Too tight and you get a lot of noise.

Its not the valve cover it has nothing to do with it.

Anyone got a idea? I'd like to know where to start. I've drove it the past day or so and the noise only really happens 35-40% of time... chain slapping.... too much timing advance? It does have a slightly high idle of 900-950 and throttle sticks alittle at 1200 sometimes....

Also if anyone has valve chatter i highly recommend adjusting because it helped my engine perform alot better it got rid of random miss fires and a lil stumbling. Plus its not so rough idle. Anywho still lookin for help...

When I rebuilt my 22RE, I had loud valve chatter because the exhaust was backflowing slightly. It's a long shot...

Sounds like you have a bad tensioner. They are very delicate. The tensioner uses oil pressure so the chain will bounce around if you are just bumping the engine. Also you can have a rattle at startup because there is no oil pressure.

If you have a chain rattle that comes and goes I would say tensioner.

I did a chain job and 2 weeks later pulled it all apart again because of the tensioner. Ted at engbldr was great and sent me a new one free. I buy all my 22re stuff from him.

I've spoken with a Toyota mechanic and he said he's never seen a tensioned go wrong. His personal vehicle is a 22RE 4Runner, so I'd be inclined to believe him.

well some people have good luck with certain parts and some don't. But a new chain making noise 40% of the time during driving no matter temp or oil..... i was told by many techs its prolly the tensioner.... but i dunno.

i wonder how such a simple oil pressure tensioner can work sometimes and not... i'm not really in no mood to take off the front of the motor again to fix it.... couple years ago a new timing chain, timing cover, guides, tensioner, water pump, oil pump, and head gasket wear done.... only about 40k miles ago...

dunno man i'm tripping too. I though of some ideas like thicker oil or slow timing advance which i do plan to try cause my timing is super advanced passed the timing tab itself.
