Question Name that engine sound

Can anybody tell me what this clacking sound is? My 3VZ-E has made it for quite some time, but only on the driver's side of the engine. Is it valve adjustment time?

man i was camping this weekend and ran through some mudd puddles and got the thing covered, and then i hopped out my v63.0 and threw my burning roach on the ground and heard that the air intake/filter was making a loud sound, poppeed the hood and heard the same sound, revved motor, and was like !!!!! sounded like the thing was going to die, grinding clacking banging booming sound, so i shut the muther off and restarted it about an hour later, no problem no weird sounds just pure 3.0 goodness!!

The video really doesn't do the sound justice. It's more like a ticking sound than a knocking sound, even though that's not how it sounds on video

Hey Yotaman. I have the same sound, mechanic says one or more ofthe bucket lifters on my drivers side may have cracked or collapsed. Im pulling the valve covers this weakend to fix a leak so I am going to have a look. Is yours louder when it is cold? It makes sense that it would be if your sound is lifters, because the oil has not worked its way into the valve train yet. Mine got worse when switching to synthetic as well. To thin an oil.

if you sure its not coming from the bottom end, then its probably the valves.. or skirt slap..

It's actually quieter when the engine is cold

I'm sure that it's not the bottom end. In the video you can hear the sound coming from the valve cover area, so I figure it's the valves. Also, I know that the valves on my engine have never been adjusted so....... One more thing; if there is a noise coming from the top end of an engine, the noise would occur once for every two rotations of the crankshaft correct?
