I've been working on my truck yesterday and went to take the winch off to do some cleaning and maintence and noticed a Bolt that connects the winch box to the front bumper area was almost all the way out and stripped pretty bad. so I figured that means it’s time to replace it. Is something like this available only at like auto supply places or online? Or would a general hardware store have it? I figured worse comes to worse is I just go down to the local pick n pull.

if any one can guess the thread dimensions that would be even better. It’s shaft is 1cm wide and 4cm long

 

Get your ruler out and measure it. Typically meteric hardware is 1.00, 1.25, 1.50 thread pitch..

You'll need to get dirt and crud out of the head to find out what hardness spec you're after.

Armed with a pitch, size and spec you shouldn't have much trouble finding something that will work at a good bolt supplier.

 

My local Ace Hardware has a tiny section with metric fasteners.. I think they even have a pitch gauge, but as Co_94_PU says, there are really only about 3 choices. My guess is you'll count 8 threads in 1cm (making it an M10-1.25 ). Many communities have a Fastenal retail store, but there you might have to buy a bag of 10.

The hardness spec he's referring to is really a strength spec, as shown in this page of the FSM: http://web.archive.org/web/201007280.../8standard.pdf Yours looks like a "no mark," or lowest strength. Feel free to splurge on a stronger bolt if they have them.

A bolt that badly stripped could easily have damaged the female threads into which it mates. While you can clean up the female threads with the correct-sized tap, there isn't much you can do about the missing metal. If the hole is a through-hole, you might be able to use a 10mm longer bolt and a nut.

 

Either hardware or well-stocked auto part store is probably fine, long as you find one with drawers of fasteners. They should also have a collection of thread-sizing devices mounted on a flat panel. Your photo doesn't look like the bolt is hardened to any important degree but that should be easy to figure out for an experienced person at the counter of a good auto part store.

There are a pair of M10's and M12's that have bind nuts in the frame facing the front of the truck. This bolt is likely to be grade 10.9 and is M10 x 1.5 but a thread gage is needed to verify the pitch.
You can find these at a True Value Hardware store that has the draws of hardware available in thier inventory offering. But form the look of this fastener you had probably better get a tap and chase out the threads in the frame!

I'm hoping not!! But we will see, From what a family member said another family member had tried to take off the bull. Bar off to paint it but didn't get far before giving up. (it was a gift from my family so he was being nice)THere was another bolt in there but you could see Where it was turned so i suspect he got one out but didn't have the weight supported andit shifted and when he took this one off the steel plate rubbed it flat is my only guess as there was marking on plate as well that kinda made me think it, it still felt threaded when i stuck my finger inn but that doesn't tell much
