mystery cv noise
fyi 95 4runner 3.0 auto 4x4 manual hubs
well it start it off i have some noise problems. it is a rattling metal on metal contact when i go over ruff (SP?) road. i crawled under my car to see where the noise was coming from. when i grabbed onto the cv shaft and gave it a shake it hits metal on metal. the noise is coming from where the cv shaft enters into the wheel area. it happens on both sides and doesnt matter if hubs are locked in or not. i replaced the left cv not too long ago (due to a ripped boot) and it still makes that noise. any help or idea of why it could be making this noise would be helpful. (it just gets annoying hitting little bumps in the rode and thinking something is going to drop out of the bottom of your car)
thanks david

I had the same problem and I know what you mean about it being annoying. I found it quite embarrassing, to tell you the truth.
Your inner spindle bushings are worn out.

I guess it depends on how much wheeling you do and water you go through.

I check them frequently and grease when needed - I'm usually in there more than once a year anyways.
I will certainly agree that you should lube the heck out of the bushing while you're changing a CV!

well i did use make that spindle bushing lubricator (cant think of who posted its write up but def. good stuff). are these the little bronze copper looking things? i think i have seen a write up on here on how to replace them. sounds like extensive. but since they are "shot" just adding more grease wont settle things out?
