Well I decided to start a post for my youngest son and his first Yota. You might remember my post for my oldest son's first Yota.....

My youngest son just turned 15 and has decided he wants to fix up a Yota also. We looked around for a while and found an '89 4x4 for $850. Not in the best of shape but it has a lot of potential. We started off doing all the essentials. Tune-up, getting the motor running good. The motor runs nice and is strong. It has the 22RE. Had to do some front end work. Replaced all the tie-rod ends and sleeves, greased everything up. This truck rides pretty nice. On to the body. It is rough but workable. The bed is totally being scrapped. This is what it looked like when we picked it up.






Teaching him how to do some maintenance.





Found some pretty bad rust on the drivers side floors boards. Cut out all the rust and put in some new sheet metal. Got it all sealed up and ready to go.


















Removed the bed and got to work on the frame. Nothing really rusted too major. Used a product called Must For Rust and sprayed the whole frame down then 2 coats of Rust-Oleum Professional Flat Black Oil Based Enamel. Frame is all sealed up and ready for the new bed. My son wants to build his own flatbed. He already has it drawn up. All we need now is some steel.











Got the new fenders on today.




Going into winter here so not sure if much more will get done until spring. Don't have a garage here to work in. I will keep this post updated as we go along and finish this project.

 

Nice work so far. if he wants an exhaust done. or if yall are gonna do it yourself go ahead while the bed is off a lot easier. i did mine myself i welded a "Thrush Welded" on to mine. sounds mean.

 

Just completed my exhaust with the Thrush 2". Not sure I would call it "mean" but not too loud.

 

well i have the 3" inlet and outlet. and a 3.0 V6 mines deep and loud. when i cranp it in the mornings it rattles the windows on the house. but when i had it straight piped it was too much couldnt hear anything or listen to music, no phone calls no talking or anything

Nice work..too bad about the floor.- did you guys doing anything about the cab mount? Many times if the floor is liike that the mount is severely weakened

 

Nice project guys. What thickness of sheet metal did you use? I have to do the same to my 4Runner floor.

 

The cab mounts were actually in good shape. I was concerned about that area when I saw all the rust, but they are totally fine.

I dont know the thickness of the sheet metal I used. I had some sheet metal boxes from work that we tore down and flattened out to use for the floor. I can tell you it is thicker than the factory metal. It is pretty solid!

 

Oh man, that bed is in really good shape. I wish you were closer or I'd offer to come buy it off of you! Mine is a billion times worse than that!

Crap, I'd put a new bedside on that thing in a heartbeat. Maybe even fiberglass sides.

if i didn't live so far away i would take it i don't even have a pickup. but that bed is in decent shape all things considering. little bit of work will go a long way on it. lookin like its gonna be a great project tho!

 

very nice build. Good father son time. He will learn alot and respect the truck even more now that he has built it with you. If you scrap the tailgate would you sell me the handle and guts of the tailgate?

 

Your sons got some good skill there. I wish I could've been working on cool stuff like this when I was that age. Lucky kid.
