My Timing Issues

Well i got the timnig chain on. I went to time the Toyota. I jumpered the the necessary wires (22RE) and put the light on the timnig mark. It was off, so i turn it, i can get it to abotu 14 (just off the scale) but no more to 5. I pulled the distributer to try adn move it over a tooth but i was either going too far but i couldnt get it to go any more. It runs great as is, but just off on timing. I unjumpered the port and tried to time it at 12. Well i cranked it up, and put the lgiht on and for a second i had the timnig at about 5, but when i twisted the distributer it went back to the previosu timing of abotu 14 ( just off the scale) So Should i pursue it being off one tooth? Or go about cleannig the TPS? I had to stop for the night cause the kids woke up, but i just want to formulate the next plan of attack. But it seems the jumper had no affect on timnig.

First make sure that your distributor is set on the correctly. To set the distributor correctly, set your crank at TDC then pull the distributor. Next, turn the rotor so it is facing straight up (12:00). When you push the distributor back in, the rotor should turn counter clockwise to about the 10:30 position. There is a little mark on the distributor housing and it should be in line with the center of the rotor.
Once that's good, be sure that your getting a good connection when jumping the terminals. Your check engine light should be flashing. Lastly if none of that helps, check out your TPS and make sure it is good/adjusted properly.

Well i snuck out and got a little more into this. Since i do not have a tach on the rig, i put my dweel/tach on to see what it was at. The idle was way high for me to time it. So i knocked it down to spec and was able to 12 degrees. It runs good still. So i am OK with thetimnig and ready to test drive it. BUT I do have an issue with the TPS it seems cause the jumper does nothing to affect the timing. It stays at 12 degrees (once i set it) and doesnt change when jumpered or unjumpered. So i will go at cleannig the TPS tomorrow and adjust it. Fortuantely i broguht my multi-meter home from work. Now i hope the diesel sound i had at startup was jsut high idle since when i pulled my timing chain and it was in excellent shape, everything was brand new and no marks on the timngi cover. So it seems i changed the timnig chain for nothing I just hope i dont get any oil leaks, or possibly i cured my oil leaks. But i hope the idle change will fix the rattle since i could recreat e the rattle when i revved the engien at the throttle body. Oh well. At least i now know there is not much to this motor, it is pretty basic
