My new 89 runner

My new 89 runner - 1st time gitten her dirty! Scroll to bottom
I have been looking through the forums for a few weeks and found a 4runner yesterday. Drove from Wichita, KS to Oklahoma City to pick it up and paid $2350. Truck has 330,000 but motor and clutch was replaced at 250,000.
It drives good but has a hard time at highway speeds, it has 33's with the stock gears so I am thinking about changing the gears. I have been reading around but how much would changing gears run me?
I like the height with the 2 inch body and 2 inch suspension lift. Does the clock stay on in all 4Runners because it does in this one?
Anyways, I just thought I would show off my proud addition. It will be hauling a popup this summer for some family camping trips.

Welcome to YotaTech!
To get some gears for you rig should cost you about $200 without labor, to accommodate those 33's, 4:88 gears are the appropriate ratio to return your rig to stock power. Hope this helps, and that is one clean 4runner!
My 1st gen 4runner, the clock stayed on all the time, but that thing had more electrical problems than Britney Spears was "pregnant"

Wow! Man you are in for a world of trouble with that year model and that motor. I hope you have access to a Factory Service Manual and a pretty decent garage, get ready to get your hands dirty...........

I am not sure what kind of timing chain guides it has, the previous owner couldn't remember. Is it a lot of labor to check, like removing the timing cover plate?
Please tell me there is a secret to improving gas mileage, I know it is a small tank but I am filling up every few days. This tank I am going to figure the gas mileage. I am thinking that changing the gears will help and take some load off of the engine.
The black on the bottom is bed liner from a rattle can, the previous owner did a good job with it.
Can't wait for nicer weather so I can take the top off. Will order a bikini top soon...the wabfab looks like the best quality product with no complaints.

*grin* I just wanted to make sure you felt welcome.
As far as the guides go I really have no idea. I think you can pull the valve cover and look inside through the front of the motor, don't qoute me on that though.
Fuel milage.....that right there is a can O' worms. Find out what kind of milage you're getting and we can try and improve on that. From reading your original post I'd have to say that regearing is going to help a lot. A new set of plugs/wires/cap/etc will also help a little if your's have been in there a while. Is the check engine light (CEL) on?

Congrats on the new 4runner. I really like the color and everything about it except the wheels. Doesn't really match the style in my opinion.
And as far as gears, you should look into getting complete thirds from a V6 with factory 4.88's. I just got some new thirds for my truck from different sources and with shipping I'm looking at $315. Not too bad. One is from a member here and the other from www.carpart.com. Or could be carparts.com, can't remember.

I have had an offer to buy thirds from someone but it was a lot more than 315. I will keep looking.
I assume the thirds will be a pretty easy install.
I have wrenched on cars a lot but am finding out that a truck is quite a bit different.
I have a 8 inch rear and a 7.5 inch front.?

You do indeed have an 8" rear and 7.5" front IFS.

EGADS! That thing is gorgeous!!! It looks like it was the same color as mine, baby blue, er, light blue metallic.
For some reason the lights on the front remind me of the movie "Kung-Pow"....

Did some photoshop to see what a few different Rock Crawler wheels would look like. Which wheel gets your vote?
And for a comparison to how it is now.
