By my hand or not??

So... for the past year, my '88 4runner's 22re has been developing a bunch of ticks, odd noises, and leaks, and from the way that it's running, I don't think it could be putting out more than 90hp.... It's on its way out. So I've been researching rebuilds and how to rebuild the 22re, and am now at a fork in the road. I was thinking that if I was going to rebuild it, I would try to get as much horsepower out of it as possible.... So here's the question.

On the one hand, I could get another 22re swapped in that would be built for me by these mechanic guys in Oceanside that only work on 22res all day. For $1600, I can get a mechanic estimated 145 hp with it bored 40over, mild porting stage 2 cam, stock valves, header, head, clutch, oil pump, water pump, gaskets, labor, tune up. That also includes the install.

What I was going to do is us ENGNBLDR's Street RV Head and rebuild kit with the 261 cam, oil pump, and timing chain with driver's side steel rail. I was also going to have the block bored 40over and the crankshaft turned, and buy the 1600lb mc hd clutch kit. I was also going to give it a tuneup.... If I do all the work myself, it'll all come out to be about $1500.

I value you guys' opinions, so let me know what you think I should do. I really would like to finally have a nicely running engine that might pull a small tent trailer around because my fiance really doesn't like to sleep on the ground.... :/ Does anyone have the same setup as what I would do, or does anyone have an estimate on the power output for that one? Thanks a lot in advance!

the first one sounds like a steal. i recently dropped in an $800 junkyard engine and spent close to another $800 in other parts and did all the work myself. Let them do it, save yourself the headache.

IF you feel confident that you can do the work correctly and that you don't mind not having the vehicle to drive for a while then do it yourself. Read over IAmSuperBleeder's 22re rebuild thread if you havent already. Thats a dang good thread. Of course there are others, but thats the most recent and is pretty in depth. Personally, I would do most of the work my self for a learning experience. Of course I couldnt do the machine work like boring and turning the crank because I have no machines like that. Make sure you get all the necessary tools, guides, parts, etc and you should be good to go
