My build (reassembly) thread
I wish I could say that I have a bunch of pictures to show what I have done so far, but I don't. When I get rollin on something, I just go. It wasn't until after I was done that I thought 'Dangit, I should-a taken picture along the way'. So a brief description of what I did last night and what I will be doing.....
To make preparations to put the transmission back on, I needed to pull the flywheel to get to the rear main seal. The bolts were a PITA , brute force alone didn't work, an impact wrench didn't work, but torching the bolts and applying brute force.....that worked. Next I pulled the pilot bearing, that soggy paper trick works like a charm . The rear main seal looked pretty good, but I'm gonna change it out anyway. I will put the flywheel back on and that's where that part of the project will be until I get the clutch.
NAPA just called, rear main is in.
More to come.....

Alright, snapped a few pics along the way.
Got the rear main seal and pilot bearing in (pic is a little blurry)
Engine cover back on
I stopped right there for now. I am going to wait until I get the flywheel surfaced and the clutch ready to roll.
It was cold and rainy out today, so I wasn't heavily motivated. Too cramped in the garage and couldn't roll it out onto the drive way. Plus, there is a couple of good football games on.
A couple of the other projects that are to come will be the front axles. Can you see why?
And I am going to prep the insode for a roll on liner
My garage will be a war zone in the next couple weeks. My wife is going to be starting work on her little project. Here is a little teaser....

The rear main was easier than I thought. I popped a hole in the plastic part with a little screwdriver so i could get a "tooth" of a gasket puller tool in there and just pryed it out. Came out way to easy, I had heard that they were a PITA. I will consider myself lucky.
Story to go with the 40.....A guy I used to work with had a 40 and we'd go surfing all the time. One trip he invited my future wife, and I didn't surf that day. Our 1st date was a trip to the trails, absolute blast! The trails were close to my parents house, so we show up at thier door covered head to toe in mud . They were basically speechless, they never knew what hit em and neither did I. It spun a crank bearing and she's been sitting up for a while. This summer.....it will be on
